THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO PRINCESS MOVIES
Many of us have fantasized about finding a real Prince Charming, taken quizzes to discover which Disney Princess we’re the most like, had dreams we wished would come true Cinderella style, or watched Hallmark royal romance movies for an escape. All in good fun, of course.
And let’s face it: princesses are more than fairy tale characters in storybooks – they exist in real life too. So, it’s not too much stretch of the imagination to fantasize about being a princess or imagine what it would be like.

Of course, one can always find ways to embody their own inner princess. And what better way to celebrate than indulge in some of the best (or most fun escapist) princess movies of all time?
Well, we’ve got you covered for any day you’re in the mood for a royal fix – from Disney princess movies to movies about real-life royals to cheesy but lovable Hallmark royal romances, fairy tale films, and more! No judgment here.
WHAT IS A PRINCESS?
But what is a princess in today’s modern world?
In stories or real life, being a princess is more than being of royal birth or marrying into a royal family (although that is often the case). And gone are the times when princesses had to be damsels in distress!
Nowadays, princesses are more varied. From warriors to humanitarians, and even the ordinary, everyday person choosing to make a difference, anyone can be the princess of their own life. And it’s nice to be treated like a princess (with respect and kindness) by others from time to time.
Sure, there are negative connotations to being a princess: being spoiled, overly precious, or helpless. And that can be fun in stories too!
But let’s focus on the more positive qualities and dig into our inner Disney princess for inspiration. We can be the leader of our own lives full of kindness, grace, imagination, and independence.
WHAT COUNTS AS A PRINCESS MOVIE?
So, what then counts as a princess movie?
While compiling this list, we decided to include a large variety of princess (and princess-like) films, broadening the definition of a princess movie.
From the first famous princess movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, in 1937, to the warrior princesses we sometimes have now, like in Brave, princess movies have evolved beautifully.
Now, one might think of what counts as a Disney Princess and apply that to all princess movies. Well, the criteria to be an official Disney princess are relatively strict, but I like one section and think it suits how we made our selections rather well:
“The character must be royal by birth, royal by marriage, or do a heroic deed….”
So, for this list, our criteria for princess movies were inspired by that definition of a Disney princess, plus a little extra! A princess movie must include a character that fits into one of the following descriptions:
- A royal by birth
- A royal by marriage
- Has a romance with a royal
- A princess-like character (IE: president’s daughter, governor’s daughter, etc.)
- A princess or a princess-like character doing a heroic deed
- A royal from history (and she might not always be nice!)
As for historical royals, we primarily focused on princesses or young queens at the start of their rule, so movies like Mrs. Brown were left off the list.
Genre-wise, you’ll find a bit of everything: Drama, Romance, Disney, Fantasy, Fairy Tale, Comedy, Adventure, Period Drama, and even a documentary.

So, there’s something here for everyone and all ages and moods (from young kids to adults looking for different types of princess films)! The movies are also a mix of live-action and animated. This list is more than just the best Disney princess movies (although they’re all here too!)
And while most of the movies on this list are family-friendly, some are not. I included a content note for any films above a PG rating.
And with that, here are 170 princess movies to discover. From Disney princess movies to royal romance films, emotional period dramas about royals, original fairy tale stories, romantic comedies, and more, we’ve compiled the ultimate list of princess films for you to watch.
What better way to start discovering your own magic than watching these enchanting or fascinating princess movies for inspiration?
Let’s go…
170 OF THE BEST PRINCESS MOVIES
(In Alphabetical Order)
#1 Aladdin (1992)
Disney’s Oscar-winning movie is based on the Arabic folktale and follows the clever but kind street urchin Aladdin as he and an evil Grand Vizier fight for a magic lamp. Meanwhile, the independent and compassionate Princess Jasmine longs for freedom in her kingdom and falls in love with Aladdin.
It’s hard to top this classic animated Disney musical. With brilliant voice-acting (including Robin Williams as the Genie), catchy songs, and a sweet romance, you can watch it again and again.
Plus, the strong-willed Princess Jasmine is on the official Disney princess list and one of the best.
#2 Aladdin (2019)
The live-action remake of the story stars Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith in a fun adventure film for the entire family.
#3 Anastasia (1997)
Meg Ryan stars as the amnesiac princess, Anastasia, on a journey to discover her family and heritage. Along the way, she falls in love with the lovable con man, Dimitri (voiced by John Cusack).
Anastasia has one of the best movie soundtracks. It includes the Oscar-nominated “Journey to the Past” and the haunting “Once Upon a December.”
#4 Anna and the King (1999)
This period royal romance stars Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat in a love story about a widowed schoolteacher and the King of Siam in the 19th century. A true story inspires it.
The art direction and costume design in this film are gorgeous. And the romance is memorable, with excellent chemistry between the actors.
Content Note: PG-13 for a few scenes of violence.
#5 Anna Karenina (1935, 2012)
The two best movie adaptations of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel are the 1935 and 2012 versions. The tragic saga follows an affair between the married Anna Karenina (a woman in Russian society) and Count Vronsky, leading to a devastating end.
While Anna is not a princess, princess characters appear throughout the story. This one is for viewers looking for a narrative with an artistic angle and don’t mind a serious, tragic, but beautiful tale.
The 1935 version is on the list of AFI’s 100 Years…100 Passions, while the 2012 adaptation won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Greta Garbo stars in the first, while Keira Knightley stars in the latter.
Content Note: The 2012 adaptation is Rated R for semi-explicit sensuality and violence.
#6 Another Cinderella Story (2008)
Selena Gomez stars in this modern retelling of Cinderella. It’s a teen rom-com musical perfect for tweens and is a sequel to A Cinderella Story starring Hilary Duff.
In even more fun, Jane Lynch stars as the stepmother!
#7 Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
This Walt Disney animated film tends to fall under the radar, but it has an all-star voice cast including Michael J. Fox, James Garner, Jim Varney, Leonard Nimoy, Cree Summer, and more.
The film tells the story of Milo Thatch, a linguist who searches for the lost city of Atlantis. When he discovers it, he falls in love with the king’s daughter, Kida.
And while she isn’t included on the official Disney princess list, Princess Kida is a fantastic warrior princess.

Overall, it’s silly and amusing to watch if you don’t take it too seriously.
#11 Beauty and the Beast/La Belle et La Bete (1946)
The 1946 Beauty and the Beast adaptation is pure magic and cinematic art. It’s considered one of the greatest and most influential movies in film history – ahead of its time with special effects.

#13 Beauty and the Beast (1991)
The most famous version of the French fairy tale belongs to the Disney princess movie from 1991. The iconic soundtrack, memorable voice cast (including Paige O’Hara, Angela Lansbury, Robby Benson, and Jerry Orbach), and romantic story of a cursed Prince seeking love from a young woman, make this movie one to remember.
Belle is on the official Disney princess list and is an intelligent, book-smart heroine full of compassion and courage.
You can also watch Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas.
#14 Beauty and the Beast/La Belle et La Bete (2014)
Vincent Cassell and Léa Seydoux star in this gorgeous fairy tale version. What makes this retelling unique is the stunning costumes, the best Beast makeup, and the fact that it’s the only version to borrow elements from the actual original Beauty and the Beast novel by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.
Most films focus on the short story version by Beaumont (who condensed Villeneuve’s story).
Content Note: PG-13 for fantasy violence, partial nudity, and sensuality.
#15 Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Dan Stevens and Emma Watson star in this live-action retelling of the Disney classic. While not as good as the Disney cartoon, it’s still a great family princess movie and received two Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Achievement in Production Design.
#16 The Black Cauldron (1985)
The Black Cauldron is another underrated Disney cartoon with a fabulous princess character: Princess Eilonwy (even though she’s not counted on the official list).

It’s based on The Chronicles of Prydain books by Lloyd Alexander and influenced by Welsh mythology.
#17 Black Panther/Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2018, 2022)
Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright), the younger sister of King T’Challa, shines in the excellent Black Panther movies. She takes center stage in the sequel after the tragic loss of her brother.
As a character, she’s a scientifically minded, forward-thinking, sometimes sarcastic princess.
The first film won 3 Oscars, including Original Score, Production Design, and Costume Design.
Content Note: Both films are PG-13 for action, violence, and some language.
#18 Brave (2012)
Brave includes another official Disney princess: Princess Merida. She’s the courageous daughter of the Queen and King of DunBroch in Scotland.

The movie won Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards.
#19 Chasing Liberty (2004)
Mandy Moore and Matthew Goode star in this cute romantic comedy about the president’s daughter (so a princess-like character), who runs off to Europe with a handsome photographer; only she doesn’t know he’s an agent hired by her father to protect her.

The three films are gorgeous adaptations of C.S. Lewis’ novels about four siblings who travel through a wardrobe during WWII and enter a magical land. They help defeat an evil witch and even become queens and kings of Narnia.
In Prince Caspian, Susan also has a cute romance with the prince (played by Ben Barnes).

#24 Cinderella (2021)
Camilla Cabello stars in this modern musical version of the fairy tale that’s perfect for teens and Tik Tok fans. It has more of a feminist twist and is sometimes silly, but overall, it is an enjoyable fairy tale film.

This fun retelling takes Cinderella to high school. While A Cinderella Story initially received negative reviews, the movie has become a cult classic.

The epic historical film won four Oscars and followed the life and romances of Queen Cleopatra, starting with her before being crowned and all the way to the end of her life.

Content Note: Rated G, but it should be PG for implied sensuality.
#27 Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (2002)

The Court Jester is a musical parody paying tribute to Errol Flynn’s swashbuckling films. It follows the story of a carnival performer who joins a scheme to take down an evil ruler and restore the rightful king to the throne.
There’s lots of romance, comedy, and adventure, not to mention an amusing princess character: Princess Gwendolyn.
See our review for more on this fun movie!
#29 Crazy Rich Asians (2022)
The huge rom-com box-office hit is based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan. The story follows Rachel Chu, a New York City professor, who travels to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s wealthy family – whom she discovers is like royalty.
While there’s technically no Prince in this tale, the movie follows the tropes of an ordinary woman falling in love with a guy who happens to secretly be a Prince (or, in this version, incredibly wealthy and powerful).
Crazy Rich Asians was a huge success with likable characters and a brilliant cast: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Harry Shum Jr., and Ken Jeong.
Content Note: PG-13 for language and suggestive content.
#30 Crown for Christmas (2015)
Hallmark’s Crown for Christmas is probably the best of the Hallmark royal romance collection – arguably because Rupert Penry-Jones (aka Captain Wentworth in Persuasion) is the dreamiest and best possible actor to play a handsome King.
Danika Mckellar also stars – playing the part of the lovable governess.
#31 Descendants Movies (2015-)
The family TV movie from Disney twists popular fairy tales and tells the story of the children of heroes and villains as they attend a prep school – while also breaking out into song-and-dance numbers.
It’s cheesy fun for the entire family. Plus, who doesn’t want to see Kristen Chenoweth play Maleficent?
#32 Diana (2013)

Content Note: PG-13 for sensuality and brief strong language.
#33 Donkey Skin (1970)
The French musical comedy is considered a cult classic about a princess trying to flee the kingdom with the assistance of her fairy godmother, so she won’t have to marry her dad, the king (played by La Belle et La Bete’s Jean Marais). Yes, you heard that right!
There’s a Prince Charming, so no worries, the princess does not end up with the king.
The movie is based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault.
Content Note: NR. It doesn’t have explicit content, but it includes adult themes.
#34 Downton Abbey (2019)

Content Note: PG-13 for semi-explicit sensual content, brief nudity, and thematic material.

The Emmy-nominated TV film worked as a pilot for the Elena the Avalor series about a Latina princess. It’s perfect princess fun for younger fans.
#37 Elizabeth (1998)
Cate Blanchett gives a brilliant performance as Queen Elizabeth, portraying her in the early years of her reign. The movie also focuses on her romance with Robert Dudley.
The biopic won an Oscar for best Makeup and received numerous other nominations.
Content Note: Rated R for some explicit sensuality, nudity, and violence.
#38 Ella Enchanted (2004)
Based loosely on the Gail Carson Levine children’s novel, Ella Enchanted is a delightful romantic fairy tale twist on the Cinderella story. It’s full of adventure, romance, musical numbers, a great cast, and great messages.
Plus, it has Cary Elwes as the villain!
Anne Hathaway stars as Ella, with Hugh Dancy playing the dashing prince.
#39 Encanto (2021)
The new Disney animated musical film with original songs from Lin Manuel-Miranda is absolute perfection!
And while Mirabel isn’t technically a princess, she fits into the role of one – meant to take over as the head of the Madrigal family. She’s empathetic, quirky, emotional, and strong.
Encanto went on to win Best Animated Film at the Oscars.
#40 Enchanted/Disenchanted (2007, 2022)
Amy Adams stars as Giselle, a Disney-like princess character who leaves her fantasy (and animated) world of Andalasia and enters the real world of New York City.
There, she falls in love with a lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) instead of the prince she was supposed to marry. It’s an enchanting, funny, and romantic film with three Oscar nominations.
The sequel takes place fifteen years after the original, with Princess Giselle questioning her happy ending.
#41 Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)
The film Ever After takes the romantic period drama approach to Cinderella – removing the fantasy elements and focusing more on creating an epic love story with brilliant characterization.
It’s the best Cinderella adaptation ever made and follows the story of Danielle (Drew Barrymore), who becomes a servant girl after the loss of her father to her cruel stepmother (Anjelica Huston).
When she meets Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), she opens his mind and heart to new ideas about becoming a better leader. But will he be able to overlook her lower station when he finds out who she really is?

It’s low budget but an enchanting musical movie. A young Helen Hunt also stars.
#47. Frozen/Frozen II (2013, 2019)
This wouldn’t be a list of princess movies without Frozen! The Disney phenomenon is about two princesses: Elsa (who becomes the queen) and her sister, Anna.
While there’s romance, memorable musical numbers you won’t be able to get out of your head for weeks, and lots of humor, the relationship between the sisters makes these two princess films ones for the ages.
The first film won 2 Oscars.

#50 Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance (2018)
The Lifetime movie showcases the courtship and romance of Harry and Meghan. While not a great film, it should please viewers looking for an escapist royal romance movie about real royals.
Murray Fraser as Prince Harry and Parisa Fitz-Henley as Meghan Markle were cast well.
Content Note: TV-PG, but it does have some sensuality.
#51 Hercules (1997)
The Disney cartoon tells the story of Hercules, a demigod raised among humans, who must become a real hero to regain his immortality. Meanwhile, Hades plots against him.
This Oscar-nominated film has an exceptional soundtrack and an unofficial Disney princess: Megara! She’s a snarky, independent, and quick-witted female character inspired by a “’40s screwball comedienne.”
#52 The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
This Disney-animated adaptation of the serious Victor Hugo novel takes on deeper themes than most Disney cartoons. The story follows Quasimodo, a kind but isolated young man with a hunchback who helps a gypsy traveler, Esmeralda, from a corrupt government minister.
He develops unrequited feelings for Esmeralda, but she loves another. And while she’s not technically a princess, she fits into Disney’s idea of a character performing a heroic deed. Still, Esmeralda has not received status as an official Disney Princess.
#53 I Am Dragon (2015)

Jodhaa Akbar is an epic historical romance film about the true love story between a Muslim Emperor and a Hindu Princess. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan stars. The princess story was a commercial and critical success.

#58 John Carter (2012)
John Carter, a lesser-known adventure film from Disney, is based on the classic sci-fi, A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The movie failed at the box office – likely due to bad marketing – but it’s pretty good.
The story is about a Civil War Veteran transported to Barsoom, a planet with people in need of his help – including a princess.
Content Note: PG-13 for violence and action scenes.
#59 The King and I (1956)
Rodgers and Hammerstein bring their talent to the story of a widowed governess and her romance with the King of Siam. The classic musical won five Oscars, including Best Actor for Yul Brynner as the King. Deborah Kerr also starred.
#60 King Arthur (2004)
King Arthur tells a more realistic version of the Arthurian legend (even if it’s still not historically accurate). In this movie, Guinevere is a warrior princess fighting in battle alongside King Arthur and Lancelot.
Ioan Gruffudd plays one of the most romantic interpretations of Lancelot, working his way through the battlefield to save Guinevere – even if she’s more in love with Arthur.
I also recommend watching the Director’s Cut as the story flows better. It also includes more scenes between Lancelot and Guinevere and Guinevere and Arthur.
Content Note: PG-13 for scenes of violence, language, and sensuality. The extended edition is more violent and could be R.
#61 The King’s Daughter (2022)
The King’s Daughter tells the story of a King’s quest for immortality by trying to drain and use a mermaid’s life force. But when his secret daughter discovers the mermaid and befriends her, it causes all sorts of trouble.
This movie was filmed in 2014 and took eight years to release – and it’s clear watching the film that there were some creative issues – despite the excellent cast.
But it’s still worth watching, and little girls will love it! There’s a princess, mermaids, a romance, and a strong performance from William Hurt.
#62 Lady Jane (1986)
Cary Elwes and Helena Bonham Carter star in this emotional biopic about Lady Jane Grey when she becomes queen for nine days to keep Princess Mary from the throne. The movie is also a tragic love story.
Content Note: PG-13 for some nudity and adult themes.

The historical Korean drama portrays the life of Princess Deokhye – the last Korean princess – who attempts to escape Japan and return to Korea.
Content Note: NR, but it does have some violence and adult themes.

Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole star in this Oscar-winning classic about King Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine during Christmas as everyone plots over who will inherit the throne. Of course, there’s a French princess in the story (Alais) too.
Besides the fabulous storytelling and acting, it’s fun to see Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton as younger actors.
#66 The Lion King (1994)
The award-winning Disney musical film tells the story of the lion prince, Simba, and his ascension to the throne.
His love interest, Nala, may not technically be an official Disney princess (she’s not human and therefore against Disney’s rules!), but she may as well be one. She’s spirited, courageous, and a voice of reason.
The Disney animated masterpiece won two Oscars.
#67 The Lion King (2019)
Disney’s live-action version isn’t as good as the original, but it’s visually stunning. Plus, it has Beyoncé voicing the part of Nala.
#68 The Little Mermaid (1989)
The mermaid princess, Ariel, makes a deal with the witch, Ursula, to become human to try and win a prince’s love in The Little Mermaid.
Ariel is an official Disney Princess with a resilient spirit and a courageous heart! The songs in this movie are a lot of fun too. You can also check out The Little Mermaid II.
The original story is based on the book by Hans Christian Andersen.
#69 The Little Princess (1939)
Shirley Temple stars in this delightful adaptation of the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It’s full of charm, heart, and a winsome Shirley at her movie star best.
While Sara Crewe isn’t technically a princess, she has an inner nobility and a courageous heart – and she gets help from Queen Victoria too!
#70 A Little Princess (1995)
Alfonso Cuarón (director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) brings his artistic style to the famous children’s story – this time with Liesel Matthews in the main role of Sara Crewe.
The family film received two Oscar nominations for Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
#71 The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)
There are not one, not two, but three amazing princess characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy: Galadriel of Valinor (an elf), Arwen (another elf and lover of Aragorn), and the human Eowyn (a princess/noblewoman of Rohan).
While the story focuses on a Hobbit from the Shire going on a quest with other men, hobbits, dwarfs, and elves, to save Middle-Earth, these three women are heroes too.
These movies are some of the bests of all time – and it’s lovely to watch these incredible female characters onscreen.
Content Note: PG-13 for violence and frightening situations.
#72 Love’s Labour’s Lost (2000)
Kenneth Branagh directs this rom-com musical version of Shakespeare’s play with a brilliant cast of actors. This movie might not be everyone’s cup of tea (it’s satirical, quirky, and strange), but we thought it was hilarious!
Branagh transforms the familiar story into a 1930s musical with Alicia Silverstone playing the part of the Princess.
Other cast members include Branagh, Natascha McElhone, Alessandro Nivola, Adrian Lester, Emily Mortimer, Carmen Ejogo, Richard Briers, Geraldine McEwan, Nathan Lane, and Timothy Spall.
#73 Maid in Manhattan (2002)
This rom-com version of Cinderella has a hotel maid falling in love with a political candidate. Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes star.
Content Note: PG-13 for some language and suggestive references.
#74 Maleficent/ Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2014, 2019)
Disney retells the story through the eyes of the villain – with Angelina Jolie playing the protagonist/villain. But have no fear; Princess Aurora is central to the story – as she may be the one to transform Maleficent back to her former kind-hearted self.
Besides the fun twisting of the fairy tale, the costumes are incredible!
