Notably, there is the recent romantic adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s classic novel, The Pursuit of Love, starring Lily James, Emily Beecham, Dominic West, Emily Mortimer (who also directs), and Andrew Scott. It premiered last year and is not to be missed!

WHAT IS ON THIS LIST?

We only included miniseries and TV shows when we originally published this list a few years ago. However, instead of writing two separate lists, we’ve decided to also include period movies as of 2022.

If you’re a fan of romantic period dramas, romanticized period dramas, uplifting historical dramas, or period-like sumptuous costume dramas (aka fantasy with a historical influence), this is the list for you. We’ve also included several British period dramas on Amazon Prime to watch.

RELATED: 55 Best Sensational Period Dramas on Netflix to Watch (2022)

Overall, we compiled the list to have a good variety, focusing on the interests of Silver Petticoat readers. So, the “best” might not be objectively the best – but they are the best choices for fans of romantic or Romantic (emphasis on the capital R) period dramas.

And like always, we mainly selected series with less explicit content. Enjoy!

Note: This list was first published in 2016 and is now up to date as of December 2022. We plan to update this page a couple of times a year. So, bookmark this page for future updates.

The availability of these period pieces on Amazon Prime Video is subject to change at any time. This list only includes available period dramas in the United States.

Why You Should Check It Out: The new romantic period drama series has had a polarizing reaction with the audience – arguably because it has a different feel than the iconic nineties film.

The show deals with heavier themes like identity, racism, and even what it was like to be an LGBTQ woman in the 1940s.

The series is an entertaining watch with intriguing characters and interesting stories.

About Autumn Topping

In second grade, Autumn wrote her first story, “The Spinach Monster,” and hasn't stopped writing since. Intrigued by the tales her grandmother told of vampires, witches, and ghosts as a girl, she's always been drawn to the fantastic. Later, Autumn studied English and Creative Writing (continuing her love for classic literature and everything old-fashioned) and graduated with an MA in Children’s Literature and an MS in Library & Information Science from Simmons College. Currently, she co-runs this lovely site and works as a YA Librarian.

  1. Great list! So glad there are some amazing period dramas with easy access. Makes it nice for those viewers who prefer streaming over DVD sets. 🙂

    • Well, this list was put up in 2016, so a few are no longer there. Streaming services change their content frequently. That said, I checked the titles and a good majority are still available. Though this is for Amazon Prime U.S. and I don’t know where you’re from!

  2. Thank you so much for putting this list together. Since we “cut the cord” it takes a little research to find free quality shows to watch with just Prime (and Acorn TV). Most of the shows were still available, and I’ve added about 6 to our watchlist! Yea! Well done.

  3. Yes it is a shame that those of us long term subscribers have very little new content to view with our Prime Membership…

  4. I love your site! Just finished watching Sanditon and really sad about the ending. Anyway, I just want to recommend a highly addictive and wonderful Russian series that made me swoon- “Detective Anna”. This has a great plot and two actors with awesome chemistry.

  5. Your very 1st show on this list, A French Village is excellent, but to my dismay only the 1st season is included in Amazon Prime. To continue watching I would have to pay $7.99/mo. for another provider. I consider this a bait & switch tactic and I’m very disappointed. You should have included this information in your review. I have no problem paying extra for services like Showtime, HBO and several others because I know what I’m getting beforehand.

    • Thanks for letting me know! I researched as best as I could, but it is easy to miss things. I’ll update that information. Prime Video changes availability all the time too and it is hard to keep up. That first season thing seems to be a new marketing tactic from Amazon and may be happening more and more, unfortunately.

  6. Regarding “Little Men,” based on Louisa May Alcott’s book, there was definitely enough conflict and drama in that book to fill a movie WITHOUT arbitrarily killing off Jo’s husband Fritz Bhaer (which did NOT happen in the book)! I will definitely not be watching this one!

  7. The Courier is a brilliant movie and one of those under-rated non-fiction espionage classics that deserve so much more adulation. Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant, indeed brilliant beyond belief once you compare pictures of him in the film with Greville Wynne in real life. Also meriting praise is Merab Ninidze who plays the Russian spy Oleg Penkovsky who fed Wynne data on the Russian missile build-up in Cuba. In real life these heroes helped JFK prevent the Cuban Missile Crisis getting out of hand.

If you liked Bill Fairclough’s epic spy novel Beyond Enkription in The Burlington Files series you are going to love The Courier and vice versa. Why mention that you may ask? It too is an under-rated fact based espionage thriller and coincidentally Bill Fairclough’s father, ex British military intelligence, was a close adviser to SuperMac, the British Prime Minister credited with advising JFK during the Cuban missile crisis. Just like Ben Macintyre’s The Spy and the Traitor about KGB Colonel Oleg Gordievsky, both the Courier and Beyond Enkription are “must reads or must views” for all those who claim to be espionage cognoscenti.
