It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a Jane Austen fan in possession of a TV, must be in want of Jane Austen movies to watch.
Well, look no further. After intense research, I’ve organized a list of where to watch Jane Austen movies on various streaming services right now. If a film’s only available to rent/buy digitally or only on DVD, I’ll let you know.
From faithful adaptations such as the iconic ’95 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth to modern-day retellings like Clueless, there’s plenty of Jane Austen movies and TV shows to watch. So, whether you’re a curious viewer looking to dip your toes into Jane Austen’s books and movies for the first time or loyal Janeites ready to watch your favorite adaptation for the 50th time, I’ve got you covered.

What you won’t find in this article is a list of numerous Jane Austen adaptations that have been lost and will likely never be available to watch. IE: The 1960 adaptation of Persuasion that was deleted due to the BBC cleanout.

The titles are organized alphabetically, so you can read through the entire list to find new Jane Austen movies and Jane Austen TV series to watch. Or you can jump to the movie/show you’re interested in finding.
I’ve included reasons why you should consider checking out most of the adaptations. That said, I haven’t seen every production yet, so I may not always know if it is good or not (based on my subjective opinion, of course).

1. A Very British Romance With Lucy Worsley (2015)
PBS Synopsis: Lucy Worsley delves into the history of romance to uncover the forces shaping our very British happily ever after and how our feelings have been affected by social, political, and cultural ideas.
Where to Watch: Currently unavailable. However, you can watch clips on PBS Passport. Hopefully, the documentary will return to PBS in the future.
Why You Should Watch: Lucy Worsley always entertains while giving history lessons! Plus, you learn more about Jane Austen in this fun documentary.
2. Acting For A Cause: Pride and Prejudice (2020)
IMDb Synopsis: Pride and Prejudice motivate all of us when it comes to life choices – but more so for Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, in the perfect story of love and negotiation in Regency England.

Why You Should Watch: This is a reading of Pride and Prejudice performed by popular young actors “acting for a cause.” Jacob Elordi makes for a good Mr. Darcy! Jane Austen’s stories are meant for reading aloud, after all.
3. Aisha (2010)
Amazon Synopsis: Aisha is a 2010 Indian romantic comedy-drama film directed by Rajshree Ojha, starring Abhay Deol and Sonam Kapoor in the lead roles and Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh, Ira Dubey, and Amrita Puri in supporting roles. It is set in the upper-class society of Delhi, India, and is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma.
Where to Watch: Rent/buy on digital (Amazon, Vudu) and DVD (expensive).
Why You Should Watch: If you love romantic comedies, modern Jane Austen retellings like Clueless, or Bollywood movies, this one is for you.
4. “American Playhouse” Sensibility and Sense Episode (1991)
IMDB Synopsis: Two women and a man start out their adult life with all good intentions to change the world and keep their love alive and vital, but as time shows them (and us), it’s not that easy.

5. Austenland (2013)
Amazon Synopsis: Jane Hayes’s (Keri Russell) adoration of all things Jane Austen is complicating her love life. Determined to be the heroine of her own story, Jane spends her life savings on a trip to Austenland, an eccentric Austen-inspired resort, where she has a difficult time determining where fantasy ends and real life begins.

Why You Should Watch: Because Jane Austen fans are fantastic! Austenland is also cheeky, romantic, witty, and hilarious. Plus, could there have ever been a better Jane than Keri Russell? JJ Feild and Jane Seymour also star.
6. Austentatious (2015)
Amazon Synopsis: The beloved works of Jane Austen delightfully collide when Elinor, Marianne, Emma and Lizzie join forces as the best of friends in today’s world. As each challenges the good, bad and ugly of life, they lean on each other to conquer career, family, and love. Find friendship and fall in love with the heroines of Austentatious.

Why You Should Watch: The premise is cute. While the acting isn’t great (I’ve only seen episode 1, so maybe it improves?), it’s good, clean fun for the entire family.
7. Becoming Jane (2007)
Amazon Synopsis: Meet twentyish Jane Austen: in love…and on a path that would lead her to Pride and Prejudice. Anne Hathaway plays romantic, observant Jane in a cinematic imagining of her life.
Where to Watch: You can stream on Hoopla or rent/buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: Watch for the unabashedly swoon-worthy romance. While much of the Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy romance in the film is guesswork and even somewhat fictional, as a period romance, this movie is exceptional. Not to mention that epic dance between Jane and Tom Lefroy. Sigh!
8. Becoming Ms. Bennet: Pride & Prejudice (Also Known As Pride and Prejudice, Cut) – 2019
Official Synopsis: Kate, an American internet star, lands the role of her dreams as Elizabeth Bennet in a production of Pride and Prejudice. Unfortunately, she struggles with her British accent as well as her theatrically trained co star, Liam, who feels she is not worthy to play the iconic role.
Where to Watch: Amazon’s Freevee, Peacock, Roku, Hoopla, Tubi, Dove Channel, and Plex.
Why You Should Watch: For Austen fans who also love sweet and uplifting Hallmark-like movies.
9. Bride and Prejudice (2004)
Amazon Synopsis: A modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, that features the lives of four unmarried daughters in an Indian family.
Where to Watch: Stream on Hoopla. Rent/buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: There’s dancing, singing, romantic scenes in the rain, and it’s an excellent Bollywood retelling. Plus, the two leads are great. You also have Naveen Andrews (Lost) playing Mr. Balraj, aka Mr. Bingley.
10. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Amazon Synopsis: A British woman is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary.
Where to Watch: Stream on Paramount+, Hoopla, and Pluto TV. Rent/Buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: Because when you can watch Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, you should watch Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Plus, the film is hilarious. Though it is Rated R so keep that in mind.
Besides Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones, Hugh Grant also steals the film as the hilarious bad boy Daniel Cleaver.
Plus, not only did the author of the book, Helen Fielding, help write the script, but Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice 1995) and Richard Curtis (Love Actually) co-wrote the screenplay as well.
Movie Clip: Hugh Grant and Colin Firth fighting over Bridget (Renee Zellweger) may be one of the funniest scenes in cinema. Warning: There’s brief strong language in the clip below.
11. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)
Amazon Synopsis: Beloved screwball Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) struggles to make love last in this sequel with Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.
Where to Watch: Hoopla, Pluto TV. Rent/Buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: Because it’s influenced by both Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. And there’s never enough Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. And while not as good as the first film, it’s still a fun romantic comedy with a fantastic cast.
12. Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)
Amazon Synopsis: Oscar® winners Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth are joined by Patrick Dempsey for the next chapter of the world’s favorite singleton in “Bridget Jones’s Baby.” Directed by Sharon Maguire (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”), the new film in the beloved comedy series based on creator Helen Fielding’s heroine finds Bridget unexpectedly expecting.

Why You Should Watch: To see more Bridget and Mark Darcy and find out how their story ends. Arguably better than the second movie, this is a rather enjoyable romantic comedy with Bridget hilariously bumbling through pregnancy.
Warning: This film contains strong language.
13. The Cate Morland Chronicles (2016)
Official Synopsis: Follow Cate as she moves to LA, meets dreamy Henry Tilney, navigates the Thorpes, and eats tacos with her brother Jimmy. Based on Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey!

Why You Should Watch: If you’re into geek culture, Jane Austen, or web series, this is a fun one to check out.
14. Christmas at Pemberley Manor (2018)
Hallmark Synopsis: As Christmas approaches, Elizabeth Bennett (Lowndes), a New York event planner, is sent to a quaint, small town to organize their holiday festival.
When she arrives, she finds William Darcy (Rady), a high-profile billionaire lacking in holiday spirit, in the process of selling the charming estate she hoped to use as a venue.
Determined to make her event a success, Elizabeth persuades the reluctant Darcy to let her hold the festival on the historical estate once known for its holiday cheer. When they wind up working together to arrange the festivities, the unlikely pair begins falling for each other.
But when complications arise and the festival is unexpectedly shut down, the couple parts ways and Darcy moves forward with his plans to sell the estate. On the night before Christmas, a wistful Elizabeth hopes for a Christmas miracle to revive the festival, save the estate and rekindle her holiday romance.

Why You Should Watch: While I personally didn’t love this one, it does have Michael Rady as Mr. Darcy, and he’s always good.
15. Clueless (1995)
Amazon Synopsis: Cher’s world unravels with the sudden appearance of two hunks: a sexy new classmate, and her square but cute ex-stepbrother. Now she’s learning that when it comes to love, she’s Clueless.

Why You Should Watch: This modern retelling of Emma is a classic and iconic teen comedy for a reason.
16. Clueless (1996)
Product Description: Rachel Blanchard played the role of Cher that was originated by Alicia Silverstone in the movie. Stacey Dash (Dionne), Donald Faison (Murray), Elisa Donovan (Amber), Wallace Shawn (Mr. Hall), and Twink Caplan (Ms. Geist) all reprised their movie roles for the television series, which ran on ABC from 1996 to 1997 and with a network change on UPN from 1997 to 1999.
Where to Watch: Buy on DVD (only rare copies available). Some low-quality episodes are on YouTube.
Why You Should Watch: It’s a fun ’90s show starring Rachel Blanchard. The series lasted three seasons and starred some of the original cast members, so it’s a fun treat for fans of the movie.
17. Death Comes to Pemberley (2013)
Amazon Synopsis: From PBS and MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! – An adaptation of P.D. James’ witty and inventive continuation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, picking up the story six years after the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy.
As preparations are being made for a ball at their magnificent Pemberley home, the discovery of a corpse brings an abrupt and shocking halt to the proceedings…

Why You Should Watch: If you love British crime dramas and British period dramas, this is the perfect miniseries to watch. Overall, it’s a fun period drama romp with familiar favorites, including Matthew Rhys, Anna Maxwell Martin, Matthew Goode, Jenna Coleman, Eleanor Tomlinson, and James Norton.
18. De Vier Dochters Bennet (1961)
IMDb Synopsis: Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five unmarried daughters, and Mrs. Bennet is especially eager to find suitable husbands for them. When the rich single gentlemen Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy come to live nearby, the Bennets have high hopes. But pride, prejudice, and misunderstandings all combine to complicate their relationships and to make happiness difficult.

Why You Should Watch: I haven’t seen it yet, but it sounds intriguing to watch a rare classic Dutch adaptation. English subtitles are available.

What You Need to Know: A few episodes of this series are based on Jane Austen’s novels. I linked to a part of these episodes found on YouTube.
20. Emma (1972)
IMDb Synopsis: While matchmaking for friends and neighbours, a young 19th Century Englishwoman nearly misses her own chance at love.
Where to Watch: BritBox, BritBox on Amazon, YouTube (low quality). Buy on DVD.
Why You Should Watch: This is an underrated and incredible version full of wit.
21. Emma (1996)
Amazon Synopsis: High-society girl Gwyneth Paltrow plays matchmaker with varying results in this adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel.
Where to Watch: Stream on Paramount+, Hoopla, and Pluto TV. Rent/buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam shine onscreen together in this intelligent adaptation. Out of all the Emma adaptations, I think this one understands Jane Austen’s wit the most.
The Emma role is Gwyneth Paltrow at her best. And it’s true to the essence of Jane Austen’s novel. And Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley is divine. He has the flirty Romantic Hero stare down pat.
22. Emma (2009)
BritBox Synopsis: Romola Garai is Jane Austen’s fickle heroine, fatally convinced she is good at matchmaking, but unaware she is playing a dangerous game that might finally force her to grow up.
Where to Watch: Stream on Britbox, Britbox Amazon Add-on. Buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: Romola Garai is the period drama queen! Plus, with an excellent cast including Jonny Lee Miller and Michael Gambon, not to mention a script from Sandy Welch (Jane Eyre, North and South), it’s a must-see miniseries.
Since this is a miniseries, there’s more time to explore Austen’s book. Plus, this is genuinely an excellent adaptation and my personal favorite.
23. Emma. (2020)
Amazon Synopsis: Jane Austen’s beloved comedy about finding your equal and earning your happy ending is reimagined in this delicious new film adaptation of Emma.
Where to Watch: Stream on Peacock Premium. Rent/buy on Digital and DVD/Blu-Ray.
Why You Should Watch: This is a fun adaptation with romance and humor. However, it is a polarizing version with mixed audience reactions.
Still, the costumes are beautiful, the production design gorgeous, and Miranda Hart is perfect. Watch and decide for yourself how you feel about it!
24. Emma Approved (2013)
Official Synopsis: Emma Approved is a modernized adaptation of Emma, a novel by Jane Austen.

Why You Should Watch: This web series won an Emmy! So, if you love web series, this is one of the better ones.
25. Emma (Musical)
Official Synopsis: EMMA, a timeless love story from one of the most widely read writers of all time, is a musical that will entice modern audiences to fall in love again with one of Jane Austen’s most adored characters. Paul Gordon’s critically acclaimed stage adaptation re-imagines Austen’s classic in mid-century modern yet keeps the language intact.

Why You Should Watch: I have not seen this musical, but it sounds like a fun watch. If you enjoy modern adaptations or are a fan of musicals, now is the perfect time to check this stage adaptation out.
26. From Mansfield With Love (2015)
Official Synopsis: From Mansfield With Love is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park presented by Foot in the Door Theatre.

Why You Should Watch: I’m not overly familiar with this one, but a modern-day Mansfield Park sounds intriguing.
27. From Prada to Nada (2011)
Amazon Synopsis: Nora and Mary are spoiled sisters living the good life in Beverly Hills until their loving father unexpectedly dies. Forced to live with an estranged aunt in East LA, the young women learn to connect with their roots in this hilarious romantic comedy.
Where to Watch: Stream on Prime Video, Tubi, Freevee, and Pluto TV. Rent/buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: This modern-day Sense and Sensibility is a fun take on the story. It’s an enjoyable watch and better than the title suggests.
28. Jane Austen & Anna Lefroy’s Sanditon 200 Years Later (Sanditon: The Musical)
IMDb Synopsis: In Jane Austen’s Sanditon, Tom Parker and the new sea bathing resort of ‘Sanditon’ suffer a financial crisis but both are rescued by clever ex-banker Sidney Parker.

30. The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)
Amazon Synopsis: A terrific ensemble cast takes reading the classics to new heights of passion in this charming romantic comedy.

Why You Should Watch: It’s a fun romantic comedy that will make you want to read more Jane Austen. Plus, there’s Hugh Dancy…
I also love how the film takes the regular guys in the story and transforms them into Romantic Heroes. It was a fun twist. Also, this is a great positive movie to watch and discuss.
31. Jane Austen’s Emma (1996)
Amazon Synopsis: Emma Woodhouse has beauty, wealth, and a penchant for meddling in the love lives of others. This radiant adaptation of Jane Austen’s treasured novel is from the award-winning team behind the BBC’s hit Pride and Prejudice.
Where to Watch: Rent/Buy on Digital (Redbox) and DVD (few copies).
Why You Should Watch: Kate Beckinsale stars in a faithful adaptation of the book. While lesser-known, it’s a worthy version worth checking out and has tons of witty dialogue.
32. Jane Austen Country: The Life & Times Of Jane Austen (2002)
Amazon Synopsis: Learn more about Jane Austen and her own fascinating life at a time in England’s history. Take a tour around the English landscape and see the lovely locations that inspired Jane Austen’s novels.

Why You Should Watch: Understanding who Jane Austen was and what her life was like brings a greater understanding of the novels.
33. Jane Austen in Manhattan (1980)
IMDb Synopsis: Two teachers vie for the right to stage a play written by Jane Austen when she was twelve years old.
Where to Watch: DVD (very few copies available).
Why You Should Watch: I haven’t seen this film, but it doesn’t seem generally well-liked. However, if you enjoy experimental filmmaking and adore Merchant-Ivory period dramas (they made this film), then give this one a try!
34. Jane Austen – Life (2005)
Amazon Synopsis: This program looks at Austen and explores her personality through visiting both her correspondence and the places where she lived, in the process making a journey through the same glorious English countryside which Austen experience for herself nearly 200 years ago.

Why You Should Watch: If you’re interested in understanding more about who Jane Austen was (or enjoy watching everything there is about Ms. Austen), check out this short documentary.
35. The Jane Games (2014)
Official Synopsis: Here are the videos for The Jane Games. A web series in which Jane Austen and her characters abandon pride and good sense to compete on a modern-day reality show.

Why You Should Watch: If you’re a fan of reality TV, then this is the Jane Austen web series for you.
36. Kandukondain Kandukondain (I Have Found It)/ Priyuralu Pilichindi (2000)
Amazon Synopsis: Priyurali Pilichindi is the story of two sisters. Elder one Soumya (Tabu) falls in love with aspiring film director Manohar(Ajit). Younger sister Meenakshi (Aishwarya Rai Bachhan) is admired by wounded Army Captain Bala (Mammooty) but likes Srikanth, a businessman who shares her passion for poetry. Complications arise when the sisters’ grandfather passes away, and they lose their family home.

Why You Should Watch: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Bride and Prejudice) stars in this Sense and Sensibility adaptation.
37. Kraft Theatre – Emma (1954)
What You Need to Know: Found in season eight of Kraft Theatre. I’m looking for a copy. But it may not have survived. This one may not be completely lost though.
38. Kumkum Bhagya (2014)
Where to Watch: The Indian soap opera is based loosely on Sense and Sensibility. It’s available to stream on Zee5.
39. The Lake House (2006)
Amazon Synopsis: A lonely doctor who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its newest resident, a frustrated architect.
Where to Watch: Rent/Buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: While not overtly a Jane Austen adaptation, the film makes numerous references to Austen’s Persuasion with some comparable themes.
If that’s not convincing enough, a persuasive article on JASNA argues why The Lake House is a loose retelling of Persuasion. Check it out and watch the film! You won’t want to miss the perfect chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.
40. Lights, Camera, Romance (2021)
Amazon Synopsis: Actress Emma Hutton is determined to help find her friend Hope a perfect match but in doing so, she accidentally tramples on several hearts. When Emma realizes she herself has always loved her good friend Gray, Emma learns love works best when she doesn’t meddle with it. A charming romance inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma.

41. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012)
Official Synopsis: My year-long video diary of my sisters, my best friend Charlotte, and eventually a guy named Darcy.

Why You Should Watch: This Emmy-winning web series started a movement. If you want to try out a web series for the first time, this is the one to watch as it’s outstanding.
42. Lost in Austen (2008)
Amazon Synopsis: Lost in Austen is an ingenious reinvention of the classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, in which Jane Austen’s story is thrown off track by a very modern heroine, Amanda Price.
Where to Watch: Stream on Peacock, Roku, Pluto TV, Shout TV, and Freevee. Buy on Digital (Amazon) or DVD.
Why You Should Watch: For anyone who’s ever dreamed of marrying their own Mr. Darcy, this is the show for you. It’s completely unrealistic and completely fun. It’s funny, relatable, and entertaining.
Plus, you can catch a young Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow) as Mr. Bingley. Elliot Cowan also appeals as the brooding Mr. Darcy. The interpretation of Wickham is unique too. Overall, if you don’t take it too seriously, this is a unique take on Pride and Prejudice.
43. Love and Friendship (2016)
Amazon Synopsis: Set in 1790s London, LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP centers on the recently widowed Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale), who seeks refuge with her in-laws to escape the scandalous rumors surrounding her private life.
While at their estate, the scheming Lady Susan decides it’s time to secure a husband for herself and for her somewhat reluctant and awkward daughter.
Where to Watch: Stream on Prime Video. You can also buy it on DVD.
Why You Should Watch: The Love and Friendship movie is light-hearted and full of wit. If you enjoy Oscar Wilde, you may enjoy this fun romp.
Plus, this lesser-known work from Jane Austen doesn’t get as much notice as her other stories, so it’s nice to see a film adaptation finally. And Kate Beckinsale gives a fantastic performance as Lady Susan.
44. Love Between the Covers (2016)

Why You Should Watch: Writer and Director Patricia Rozema brings a unique take to Austen’s story capturing the wit, satire, and narrative voice sometimes missing from Austen adaptations.
Some complain Rozema combined the novel with elements of Jane Austen’s own life. Personally, I find this adaptation to be brilliant and pure artistry.
47. Mansfield Park (2007)
Amazon Synopsis: In one of Austen’s most complex plots, Billie Piper (Doctor Who, The Ruby in the Smoke) stars as Fanny Price, who goes to live with prosperous relatives at Mansfield Park.

Why You Should Watch: It’s a pleasant (though not great) period drama, and Billie Piper gives a fine performance despite the flawed script. Plus, Hayley Atwell, James D’arcy, and Joseph Morgan also star.
48. The Many Lovers of Miss Jane Austen (2011)
BBC Synopsis: Professor Amanda Vickery looks at how Jane Austen, an anonymous minor novelist in her lifetime, is 200 years later recognised as a unique British literary genius.
Where to Watch: Tubi and Freevee; You can buy on DVD (very few copies).
Why You Should Watch: Because it’s all about Jane Austen, of course!
49. Marrying Mr. Darcy (2018)
Hallmark Synopsis: Some six months after they first crossed verbal swords at a Washington D.C. dog show, schoolteacher Elizabeth Scott (Cindy Busby) and businessman/philanthropist Donovan Darcy (Ryan Paevey) are blissfully in love and newly engaged.
With Donovan in agreement, she looks forward to planning a small autumn wedding with the help of her mother and sister. After Donovan’s previously scornful Aunt Violet (Frances Fisher) makes a heartfelt apology for her past behavior, Elizabeth is glad to include her in the planning process.
As the weeks fly by and the arrangements for the wedding grow more elaborate, Elizabeth feels the burden of expectations she will face as Mrs. Darcy.
Worse still, Donovan himself is wrapped up in his work and increasingly unavailable to her. Reminded yet again of their tremendous differences in background and temperament, Elizabeth can’t help but ask herself: should she marry Mr. Darcy?

Why You Should Watch: It’s a feel-good sequel to Unleashing Mr. Darcy and is Hallmark meets Pride and Prejudice in style, so if you’re in the mood for light-hearted entertainment this is a good choice.
If you love Hallmark movies, you’ll likely enjoy this one.
50. Material Girls (2006)
IMDB Synopsis: Two wealthy sisters, both heiresses to their family’s cosmetics fortune, are given a wake-up call when a scandal and ensuing investigation strip them of their wealth.

Why You Should Watch: It’s a cute modern version of Sense and Sensibility starring the Duff sisters.
51. Matinee Theatre – Emma, Pride and Prejudice (1956-1957)
What You Need to Know: Rare copies apparently exist! So, keep your eyes peeled. However, there is no current way to watch.
52. Metropolitan (1990)
Amazon Synopsis: In Whit Stillman’s Oscar-nominated classic, a group of young upper-class Manhattanites are in the midst of their gala debutante season when an unusual outsider joins them and stirs things up.
Where to Watch: The Criterion Channel, HBO Max. Buy on DVD.
Why You Should Watch: This film comes from the artistic visionary, Whit Stillman. It’s also loosely based on Mansfield Park.
53. Miss Austen Regrets (2008)
Amazon Synopsis: Based on Jane Austen’s actual letters and diaries, this drama unravels the secrets of this elusive woman. Jane is nearing her forties and has never married.
To her niece, Fanny Knight Jane is a favorite aunt who offers the wisdom and knowledge that will help her in her own search for a happy marriage. But surely the woman so capable of writing love on the page must have experienced love herself?
Where to Watch: Britbox, Britbox Amazon channel. Buy on DVD.
Why You Should Watch: This is an excellent film about Jane Austen everyone should watch as soon as possible. From the excellent cast to the fantastic script, this one can’t be missed. Olivia Williams, as Jane, also gives an incredible performance.
54. Modern Austen (In Development)
What You Need to Know: The CW is producing a new one-hour anthology series where each season they adapt a different Jane Austen novel, starting with Pride and Prejudice. These will be contemporary adaptations.
The series is written by Eleanor Burgess (Perry Mason), a playwright and screenwriter. I will update this as more details about the series are announced. It’s also possible the series never gets made.
55. Modern Persuasion (2020)
Official Synopsis: A modern telling of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion.” Wren Cosgrove is a happy, single, and self-confessed workaholic who, after rising to the top of the corporate ladder, finds herself coming home every night to her cat. When her firm is hired by Owen Jasper, “the man who got away,” long-lost feelings are stirred, giving Wren a second chance at true love.
Where to Watch: Hulu, Prime Video, Freevee, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Rent and buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: While it’s not the best modern Jane Austen adaptation, it’s overall a cute rom-com and Alicia Witt shines in the role.
56. Northanger Abbey (1986)
Amazon Synopsis: A taste for melodrama from reading too many Gothic novels is almost Catherine Morland’s downfall when she falls in love with Henry Tilney. Invited to stay at Northanger Abbey, she finds evidence of a sinister family secret. This is a disturbingly surreal interpretation of the Jane Austen novel.

57. Northanger Abbey (2007)
Amazon Synopsis: Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is romance addict Catherine Morland in Jane Austen’s parody of gothic fiction. A budding romance is mysteriously cut short at a medieval country house that appeals to her most lurid fantasies.
Where to Watch: Hoopla, Kanopy, PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel. Buy on digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: Because it’s the best adaptation of Northanger Abbey so far. My only complaint about this adaptation is that it’s too short! A young Felicity Jones stars as Catherine and the perfectly cast JJ Feild steals the hearts of women everywhere with his flirty and fun, Mr. Tilney.
Overall, while brief, this adaptation captures the essence of Austen’s gothic romance. You can also watch a young Carey Mulligan in a key role.
58. Northbound (2015)
Official Synopsis: Northbound is a modern take on Jane Austen’s NORTHANGER ABBEY, created by Anya Steiner.

Why You Should Watch: Another one I’m not familiar with, but it looks good!
59. Novela (1967-1972)
What You Need to Know: Episodes of this show included various adaptations of Jane Austen, including Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, and Emma. I linked to an uploaded episode of Persuasion. However, it doesn’t have English subtitles. I couldn’t find any other ways to watch this.
60. Orgoglio E Pregiudizio (1957)
What You Need to Know: This is a Pride and Prejudice adaptation from Italy. It is the only way to watch currently. But it now has English subtitles!
61. Persuasion (1971)
Where to Watch: YouTube, Plex, and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: I haven’t seen this adaptation, and it does have mixed reviews. But some people love it, so watch and judge for yourself!
62. Persuasion (1995)
Amazon Synopsis: Seven years after their breakup, a spinster and an impoverished sailor attempt to rekindle their aborted romance.
Where to Watch: Stream on Tubi or rent/buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: This movie is period drama perfection. Arguably the best Persuasion adaptation, it has excellent writing with memorable performances.

Why You Should Watch: While some complain about the now-famous scene of Anne running through Bath, I’ve come to love this emotional adaptation. Plus, Rupert Penry Jones as Captain Wentworth is altogether swoony.
Oscar-nominated actress, Sally Hawkins as Anne Elliot also proves her acting depth in this role.
64. Persuasion (2022) – Coming Soon
What You Need to Know: Dakota Johnson stars in this new adaptation of Austen’s Persuasion. Carrie Cracknell directs.
65. Pride and Passion: Telenoveloa (2018)
IMDb Synopsis: With characters freely inspired in the universe of the English writer Jane Austen, the series is a romantic story that takes place in the fictional locality of Vale do Café, in the early twentieth century.
Where to Watch: Spectrum TV.
66. Pride and Prejudice (1940)
Amazon Synopsis: Oscar ® -winning adaption of Jane Austen’s comic classic about five husband-hunting sisters in 19th-century England.
Where to Watch: Rent/Buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson are wonderful as Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. While the adaptation makes a few significant departures from the book, this is a hilarious classic film worth watching.
67. Pride and Prejudice (1967)
What You Need to Know: The British Film Institute has a copy of this adaptation. So, maybe they’ll release this 6-part miniseries on DVD one day. For now, you can watch this production on YouTube by clicking on the above link.
It makes for a fascinating watch! Just be prepared as Mary has been removed from the story.
68. Pride And Prejudice (1980)

Why You Should Watch: Because every adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is worth watching at least once. This one also stays faithful to the book.
Plus, while not as popular as the Colin Firth version, there are many fans of this miniseries who like it best.
69. Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Amazon Synopsis: The award-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s timeless Regency romance, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. This classic story of love and class centers on the strong-minded Elizabeth Bennett, who matches wits with the wealthy, conceited Mr. Darcy.

Why You Should Watch: This is arguably one of the best period dramas ever made. Because of the success of this adaptation, many more followed. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth sparkle onscreen together.
If you haven’t watched this iconic miniseries yet, watch as soon as possible! It’s absolute perfection. You should also watch for Colin Firth’s romantic gaze.
70. Pride and Prejudice (2003)
Amazon Synopsis: Jane Austen’s classic is transplanted to modern-day. While her college roommates search for love, aspiring writer Elizabeth Bennet focuses on her career but constantly finds herself fighting haughty businessman Will Darcy.
Where to Watch: Roku, Hoopla, Freevee, Plex, Tubi, and Vudu. Rent/buy on digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: While flawed, it’s still worth watching for the romance, a hilarious Mr. Collins interpretation (excellent satire), and an attractive Mr. Darcy.
Plus, it’s cute and fun, and the two leads have good chemistry. If you like wacky humor, you might enjoy this modern-day adaptation.
On a fun note, if you went to high school or college around this time, you’ll recognize the authentic fashion, which is fun! Not to mention, aspiring young writers will relate to Elizabeth Bennet.
71. Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Amazon Synopsis: HD. Keira Knightley is luminous in this winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s epic love story about five sisters and their search for husbands.
Where to Watch: Netflix. Rent/buy on digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: While the debate of which adaptation is the best (this one or the ’95 adaptation) rages on, I choose to love them equally for different reasons. This adaptation uses artistic cinematography, a gorgeous score, color schemes, etc. to help tell the story visually.
On the other hand, the ’95 adaptation focuses on presenting a close reading of Jane Austen’s novel. Both visions work. So, watch this one to appreciate Joe Wright’s visual artistry.
You should also watch because Mr. Darcy walking toward Elizabeth at sunrise, may make your heart skip a beat.
72. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Amazon Synopsis: Elizabeth Bennet a master of martial arts, and Mr. Darcy, a fierce zombie killer, must swallow their pride in order to conquer the undead.
Where to Watch: Starz or rent/buy on digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: With a great cast including Lily James, this one’s enjoyable and fun. Just don’t take it too seriously. If you love genre literary mashups, this movie’s great!
73. Pride & Prejudice: Atlanta (2019)
Amazon Synopsis: All five of Reverend Bennet’s daughters are still single. When the very eligible Will Darcy arrives in town, Mrs. Bennet sets her sights on the handsome bachelor for daughter Lizzie.

Why You Should Watch: This is a fun, unique take on Pride and Prejudice. Plus, Jackée Harry gives a memorable performance as Mrs. Bennet.
74. Pride and Prejudice: Having a Ball (2013)
Amazon Synopsis: Step inside a Regency ball restaged from Jane Austen’s time in this documentary about the social events that inspired one of the greatest novels of all time.

Why You Should Watch: I haven’t seen this one, but it sounds fun!
75. Pride and Prejudice Musical (2020)

Pride & Prejudice, based on the classic novel by Jane Austen, is a new musical adaptation by Tony Award nominee Paul Gordon (Broadway’s Jane Eyre). The show was filmed at the Tony Award-winning TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in Palo Alto, CA., where it played its world premiere from December 4, 2019, to January 4, 2020, and established an all-time box office record. The production was directed by TheatreWorks’ Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley and choreographed by Dottie Lester-White.

Why You Should Watch: I haven’t watched it yet, but from what I have heard, it has some catchy songs. It looks like a fun and cute adaptation.
76. Pride, Prejudice, and Mistletoe (2018)
Hallmark Synopsis: Darcy (Chabert) has always worked hard to prove herself and be successful on her own terms, even choosing to start her own company, rather than work with her father. Returning to her hometown for Christmas, Darcy reconnects with an old rival, restaurant owner Luke (Penny), and they are forced to plan a charity event together.
As Darcy spends time with her family and Luke, she starts to realize what matters most in life and sets out to mend her relationship with her father, and possibly fall in love. Based on the book of the same title by Melissa de la Cruz.
When to Watch: Buy it on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: While it doesn’t resemble Jane Austen’s story much, it’s an enjoyable Hallmark production.
77. Rational Creatures (2019)

Why You Should Watch: If you’re looking for a diverse Jane Austen adaptation and enjoy web series, you should check this one out! I haven’t seen it yet, but it sounds good.
78. THE REAL JANE AUSTEN (2002)
What You Need to Know: I wasn’t able to find any DVD copies, but they may exist out there. You can watch the documentary in low quality on YouTube.
79. Red Dwarf (“Beyond a Joke”)
Where to Watch: BritBox, Britbox on Amazon Channel. Buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: The sci-fi comedy series has the crew go to “Jane Austen World” in the 1997 episode, “Beyond a Joke.”
80. Ruby in Paradise (1993)
Amazon Synopsis: Reeling from her mother’s recent death, Ruby relocates to Florida and finds a job at a local souvenir shop. While befriending the shop owner and flirting with local men, she also tries to come to terms with her tragic past.

Why You Should Watch: While this Jane Austen-inspired adaptation has been polarizing, it is overall a fantastic romantic period drama series. All three seasons are now available.
82. Scents and Sensibility (2010)
HMN Synopsis: A modern take on Jane Austen where two well-to-do sisters (Ashley Williams and Marla Sokoloff) learn their family fortune has vanished, so they work together to create a new business as they both find themselves charmed by new men in their lives.
Where to Watch: Peacock, Freevee, Roku, Hoopla, Vudu, Tubi, Pure Flix, and Plex. Rent/buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: If you enjoy Hallmark adaptations of Jane Austen books, then you’ll likely appreciate this one. Plus, it has Nick Zano. It’s cheesy but fun. Marla Sokoloff (Fuller House) also stars.
83. Sense and Sensibility (1971)
IMDb Synopsis: Mrs. Dashwood and her two daughters, Elinor and Marianne, are faced with the prospect of Mrs. Dashwood’s stepson and his wife moving into their home at Norland.

Why You Should Watch: It is a must-see adaptation because it covers much of the book.
84. Sense and Sensibility (1981)

Why You Should Watch: While the adaptation was a little bit too literal and lacking in subtlety for my taste, it does follow the book closely. Many love this classic miniseries.
85. Sense and Sensibility (1995)
Amazon Synopsis: Emma Thompson stars in the captivating romance based on Jane Austen’s classic novel of two sisters’ search for love in strict Victorian society.
Where to Watch: MGM+ or rent/buy on digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: It’s an overall gem and one of the best Jane Austen adaptations ever made. Watch for the Oscar-winning script from Emma Thompson and the incredible cast – including a young Kate Winslet and a scene-stealing Hugh Laurie in a small role. Plus, Alan Rickman gives a perfect performance as Colonel Brandon.
86. Sense and Sensibility (2008)
Amazon Synopsis: Two sisters learn what it takes to find love and happiness in a restrictive high society, where wealth and status trump all.
Where to Watch: Hulu, BritBox, BritBox Amazon Channel, and Fubo. Buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: This is a fantastic adaptation of the book with a talented cast. While it’s not as “perfect” as the ’95 adaptation with Emma Thompson (in my opinion, of course), this miniseries is about as good as a Jane Austen adaptation can get.
Also, it has Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey, and he definitely puts those blue eyes to good use. The entire cast, including Hattie Morahan and Dominic Cooper, give outstanding performances. There’s also a fun duel between Colonel Brandon and Willoughby.
87. Sense, Sensibility & Snowmen (2019)
Hallmark Synopsis: The film centers on Christmas enthusiast party planners Ella (Krakow) and her sister, Marianne, who clash with their client, Edward (MacFarlane), who is a not-so-jolly toy company CEO. Starring Erin Krakow, Luke Macfarlane and Kimberley Sustad.

Why You Should Watch: Erin Krakow of When Calls the Heart stars in this loose Jane Austen retelling.
88. Unleashing Mr. Darcy (2016)

90. Wishbone: Furst Impressions (1995) & Pup Fiction (1998)
What You Need to Know: This children’s show adapted both Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey. You can watch low-quality versions on YouTube. There may be a few rare DVD copies of the entire series out there.
91. You’ve Got Mail (1998)
Amazon Synopsis: Multiple Academy Award winner Tom Hanks reunites with his Sleepless in Seattle co-star, Meg Ryan, and director, Nora Ephron, to discover love at first byte in this on-line romantic comedy.
Where to Watch: HBO Max. Rent/buy on Digital and DVD.
Why You Should Watch: While not a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, the movie pays homage to Austen’s story throughout, and no doubt the relationship between Joe and Kathleen was influenced by Elizabeth and Darcy.
Plus, this is one of the best rom-coms ever made. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan sizzle onscreen together!
