A PLACE TO CALL HOME SEASON 3 REVIEW

A Place to Call Home season 3 premiered on Acorn TV on December 21, 2015. A few episodes have been released each week since.

And for all you viewers who love to binge-watch a series (and this is one of the best suited to that practice), A Place to Call Home will be available to watch on a complete binge starting January 11, 2015, on Acorn TV – so only a few days away. Having seen the complete season, I can promise, season three is just as addicting and fantastic as the first two seasons. The series ends on cliffhangers so intense you will be on the edge of your seat until the anticipated return of season four.

For those who haven’t seen A Place to Call Home before, make sure to read my in-depth review of the first two seasons so as not to be spoiled. If you love addicting period dramas like Downton Abbey, A Place to Call Home is the perfect series to watch – though it does have a little more sex every once and a while.

For the rest, take note that before you start season three, you need to watch the alternate season two season finale before jumping into the new season. Originally, A Place to Call Home was canceled at the end of season two, so they aired an ending without cliffhangers.

But when another network (Foxtel) picked up the series and commissioned it for at least two more seasons, the original planned ending was later aired as a way to lead into the new season. Basically, season three will not make sense without watching the revised season two ending with the original planned cliffhangers first.

From there, season three starts right where season two left off. It won’t take more than a few minutes to find yourself back into the swing of the series. At the end of each episode, you’ll find yourself saying: “just one more.” This series is just that addictive. But it’s not just a soap.

A Place to Call Home season 3 continues with a superb cast, spot-on writing, gorgeous costumes and production design with some of the best characters on TV. The entire cast gives Emmy worthy performances with Marta Dusseldorp as lead Sarah Adams and Noni Hazlehurst as Elizabeth Bligh the show’s real standouts.

Thankfully, with the transition to a new network, Bevan Lee’s vision for the series remains the same. Though I will warn there are a few scenes of nudity interspersed throughout the season’s 10 episodes – unlike in previous seasons. Still, the series is not vulgar and makes for compelling television.

In A Place to Call Home season 3, Sarah finds herself reunited with her husband Rene as she works to bring him back to health. At the same time, she also struggles with her feelings for George (who is being constantly manipulated by the sociopathic Regina). More about Sarah’s past is also revealed in flashbacks during her time with the Nazis, which leads to many of her dilemmas in the present day.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Bligh really grows as a character in season three as she seeks to discover who she really is. Elizabeth even gets a new love interest! One of my favorite aspects of the season was seeing Elizabeth and Sarah become friends and allies. Both are forces of nature to be reckoned with and watching them together is a real treat.

Elsewhere, Olivia is still trying to keep her secret about baby George hidden from James. But the truth becomes more and more difficult to conceal. And as the secret threatens to tear them apart, both Olivia and James find themselves tempted by new relationships. Sadly, the villainous Andrew is not in season three, so a new man is brought into Olivia’s life.

As for Anna and Gino, their happily-ever-after romance turns into a real marriage with problems that could break them apart forever. On the opposite end, Carolyn and Jack (played by real-life married couple Sara Wiseman and Craig Hall) continue to grow closer despite some intense challenges facing them.

Overall, season three is definitely worth watching. A Place to Call Home remains one of the hidden gems of television and hopefully, more and more people will be able to discover this incredible Australian series. Seasons one through three are available to stream on Acorn TV.

CONTENT NOTE: Each episode varies in content. A couple of the episodes would be TV-M for nudity/sex scenes, with other episodes ranging from TV-PG to TV-14 for adult content. Bad language is rarely used.

  1. Sounds like ‘A Place to Call Home’ is just as good in season three as one… though ohmygosh! I’m not sure how I feel about some of these twists coming. Cannot wait to continue on (right now I think I just passed Gino and Anna’s sweet engagement scene, so it’s early days, but this series is quite good!).

  2. Great Australian shows as Miss Fisher and A Place to call home are very rarely seen on TV nowadays and it saddens me to see them go without being known to a greater audience… APTCH is an amazing, heartfelt, caring show about life and how one struggles to live it post war. Prejudices, losses, relationships that defy society at the time, jealousy, sacrifice, loyalty, family… those are a few of the show’s main themes and I absolutely love it! Each cliffhanger left me wanting for more but this one at the end of Season 3 left at the edge of my seat.
There are those characters that you’ll love right on, those you’ll learn to care throughout the seasons and those that you’ll absolutely load.

Let’s wait and see what season 4 will bring. If it keeps this way, I have no doubt that it will be perfect.

  3. So, the first two seasons are pretty clean, but season three starts showing nudity? I just started the first episode, but I don’t like nudity or sex in shows.

    • Overall, I’d say the show is not vulgar but there is mature content from time to time. So, each episode’s rating would probably vary. From my memory, I think there was a top non-sexual nude scene with a character and a couple sex scenes. Not as explicit as say in an HBO show but not completely implied either. There are a couple sex scenes in season 4 as well. If you don’t like any nudity (not common on the show) or sex this show may not be for you. I wasn’t particularly bothered as it wasn’t continuous throughout the series. But mature content is there, so watch with caution if you choose to do so. I hope that helps!

      • Do you know if there is any nudity in season 3 episodes 5-10? I’m currently on episode 4 of season 3 and ive already seen Sarah and olivia naked and I really don’t want to be surprised again. Id rather not watch it if I’m surprised again.

What about any nudity in season 4?

        • Honestly, it’s been so long since I watched it that I can’t remember. I even forgot about Olivia being nude in a scene. Must have been connected to the painting/affair? Anyway, there may or may not be. I don’t recall the nudity being continuous till the end of the season. But it has been a while. As far as season 4, I don’t recall any nudity. Though there were a couple of sex scenes – only 1 that I recall being more than mostly implicit. Hope that helps.

    • I don’t either. I watched season 1 & 2 and i started season 3 and didn’t really care to be surprised by the nudity. Thankfully my husband and kids were outside. The nudity was completely un-needed. I don’t understand why they would all of a sudden add it, it’s very disappointing.
