Lucifer is an American urban fantasy/paranormal romance television series that debuted on Fox in 2016. Tom Kapinos developed it and based it on the DC Comics book character of the same name, a Byronic version of the Devil himself.
The show aired for three seasons before being canceled by Fox. Thankfully, Netflix saved the series from cancellation – giving the addictive fantasy series three more seasons.

Unfortunately, Lucifer aired its series finale in September of this year, leaving us fans with no new future episodes to look forward to. Still, after six seasons, the series had a bittersweet romantic ending, wrapping up all the major storylines.
ABOUT LUCIFER (TV SERIES)
The series revolves around Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the Devil, who has become dissatisfied with his life in Hell and decides to spend some time in Los Angeles. While on “vacation,” he crosses paths with Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and becomes fascinated by her.
Together, they solve crimes while he seeks to become a better man. A romance develops between Lucifer and Chloe, giving the audience one of the best romantic crime-fighting duos (and of the best Byronic love stories) to ever be on television.
WHAT TO WATCH AFTER LUCIFER?
But what to watch now that Lucifer is over? If you’re like me and missing the show, you’ll be looking for other shows with romance like it. Well, I’ve got you covered.

Angel has a strong crime-solving, detective element as he hunts down evil creatures like vampires and demons, something that makes him very similar to the titular character of Lucifer.
Angel has also got solid romantic undertones between Angel and Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter). Their love story unfolds throughout the series. But one can’t also ignore Angel’s romance with Buffy or his romantic chemistry with Kate, a local detective.

#2 Arrow (2012)
Why You Should Watch:
This superhero urban fantasy series shows the journey of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as he becomes Green Arrow. He makes many romantic connections over six seasons, most notably his epic romance with Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). They’re known for having one of the best will-they-won’t-they romances.

Arrow, like Lucifer, also portrays the charismatic leading man as a Byronic Hero with broody moments and a dark past he’s trying to overcome.

#3 Battlestar Galactica (2004)
Why You Should Watch:
This sci-fi drama is one of the best series ever made with unforgettable female characters, epic love stories, and impressive mythology.
Also, Cylon Number Six, played by Tricia Helfer from Lucifer, is a great character who happens to be an angel.

#4 Beauty and the Beast (1987 & 2012)
Why You Should Watch:
Both Beauty and the Beast shows have a central romance and deal with couples trying to overcome their pasts and fight evil together in an urban fantasy setting.

They (like many shows similar to Lucifer) also feature “beasts.” Whether they transform into one because of a curse or an experiment gone wrong, both series showcase a romance between a beast and an intelligent female protagonist.
In the 2012 series, Kristin Kreuk even plays a detective similar to Chloe Decker.
Both are excellent choices for Lucifer fans; however, the 1987 series is better written.

#5 Being Human (U.K. & U.S. Versions)
Why You Should Watch:
Being Human (both versions) is about three roommates who are also supernatural creatures; one is a ghost, one a vampire, and the other a werewolf. Each series shows them trying to lead everyday lives as they fight the supernatural, their own demons, experience romance, develop friendships, and more.
Both also feature a Byronic vampire. Aidan Turner plays Mitchell, a complex and dark character with a sweet side who loves the warm-hearted Annie (the ghost). It’s one of the best Byronic romances I’ve ever seen, with Aidan Turner showcasing as much star potential and charisma as Tom Ellis.
Sam Witwer’s character, Aidan, also shows his dark side and falls in love with the female ghost!
Both series are full of drama, comedy, and romance and are urban fantasies like Lucifer – but with a lesser crime angle.

Why You Should Watch:
Black is a romantic Korean urban fantasy series about a grim reaper who falls in love with a human woman. Like Lucifer, there is a solid romantic angle, fascinating mythology, and exciting mysteries to solve.
I can’t recommend Black enough – a must-watch!

#7 Blood Ties (2007)
Why You Should Watch:
Blood Ties is a 2007 Canadian urban fantasy about a female private detective losing her sight. Soon, she crosses paths with a handsome royal vampire.
A love triangle follows between a Byronic vampire, a snarky female private eye (and former cop), and her ex-partner.
This show is just SOO good. Sure, the effects aren’t always amazing, but the writing is excellent, the chemistry off the charts good, and the dialogue extra witty.
Lucifer fans are sure to like this underrated series.

#8 Bones (2005)
Why You Should Watch:
Bones is a procedural about an FBI agent and a scientist teaming up to solve crimes. This partnership eventually blooms into a memorable love story.
It is similarly lighthearted with humorous dialogue, but with some pretty dark episodes too.

Ultimately, this is a must-watch series if you loved Lucifer, especially since Bones is Lucifer Morningstar’s favorite television series. He loves it because the Bones/Booth romance reminds him of himself and Chloe!

#9 Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a cult classic from the 90s about a witty teenage girl who slays vampires and demons.

#10 Castle (2009)
Why You Should Watch:
Castle is a romantic comedy police procedural set in New York. Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is a bestselling author who shadows Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) to research his novels.
Over time, this leads to sparks flying between the two characters – leading to one of the most popular will they/won’t they crime-fighting duos ever.
While there isn’t a supernatural angle, the romantic relationship between Castle and Beckett is very similar to Chloe and Lucifer.

#11 Charmed (1998 & 2018)
Why You Should Watch:
Both versions of Charmed are about three witch sisters that fight demons and warlocks.
You’ll love the angst, romance, magic, and clever dialogue between the sisterly cast members. There are also angels in Charmed and a perfect Byronic romance between the demon Cole and one of the Charmed sisters, Phoebe, in the original series.
While the 1998 series is superior, the new series is also fun and includes some memorable romances.

#12 Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Why You Should Watch:
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a modern spin on the Archie Comics and reveals how Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), a half-witch and half-mortal, copes with being a dark witch.
Lucifer fans will appreciate this Riverdale spinoff for its smart dialogue, interesting characters, and the supernatural romance between Sabrina and her warlock boyfriend!
While it isn’t as lighthearted as Lucifer, and is even more of a dark satire, it’s still worth watching.

#13 Constantine (2014)
Why You Should Watch:
Constantine is an urban fantasy about John Constantine (Matt Ryan), an occult detective who teams up with the daughter of a demon to solve various supernatural crimes.
Like Lucifer, there’s clever dialogue and an abundance of darkness within this series with a dynamic male lead. It also has some romance between John Constantine and Zed, though it didn’t become central to the series before the network canceled it.
If you want more Constantine, make sure to watch the same character and actor in the fun superhero series, Legends of Tomorrow!

#14 Detective Anna (2016)
Why You Should Watch:
Detective Anna is a Russian period drama and urban fantasy about a 19-year-old girl who can see spirits. She uses her ability to help solve crimes. There is a slow-build romance too!
So, if you love Lucifer, and want to watch a foreign series, then Detective Anna should be the next one on your watch list.

#15 A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Why You Should Watch:
A Discovery of Witches is a supernatural, paranormal romance series about witches, vampires, and creatures of the night.
It’s the perfect show for fantasy romance fans because of how supernatural beings deal with politics (both political/personal and supernatural politics), romance, and mystery. Plus, the central romance between a witch and a Byronic vampire is epic!
It has a talented lead actress in Teresa Palmer and a brooding, love-sick vampire similar to Tom Ellis’ Lucifer.

#16 Doctor Who (2005)
Why You Should Watch:
Doctor Who is a British science-fiction series (with urban fantasy elements) about a time-traveling alien called the Doctor who solves mysteries and fights (and saves) monsters while often traveling with companions.
Like Lucifer, this sci-fi/fantasy also has some epic romances to keep romance fans watching! The best love story is between the Doctor and Rose Tyler. SIGH! They know how to make romantic crime-fighting look good.
Tom Ellis, interestingly enough, appears as a significant character in one episode in season three. And Ellis himself has compared his performance on Lucifer as being like the Doctor! So, take that for what you will.

#17 Dracula TV series (2013)
Why You Should Watch:
Dracula was a short-lived paranormal romance series on NBC that reimagined Bram Stoker’s Dracula into an entertaining steampunk show starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
It has that gothic romantic feel with a Byronic Hero falling in love with a human woman Lucifer fans should appreciate. Victoria Smurfit’s character will also please Maze fans!

#18 The Dresden Files (2007)
Why You Should Watch:
The Dresden Files is a mystery urban fantasy series based on Jim Butcher’s novels. It follows the life of Harry Dresden, a professional practicing wizard in Chicago who solves police cases and fights off supernatural baddies.
There are light romantic elements between him and his cop friend Murphy—but not much else since the network canceled the show too soon!
The character of Lt. Connie Murphy is also similar to Chloe Decker as she is a no-nonsense cop and a single mother of a daughter. She has hinted at romantic feelings toward Dresden.

#19 Evil (2019)
Why You Should Watch:
Evil is also a crime procedural series that shows us what happens when demons come to Earth. However, this CBS series is MUCH more frightening.
Evil follows psychologist Kristen Bouchard, and David, an aspiring Catholic priest, as they investigate supernatural occurrences. While it is less of a romantic show, there is the slow-build romance between Kristen and David.

#20 The Fades (2011)
Why You Should Watch:
Tom Ellis is one of the stars of this British supernatural horror series. The Fades shows us what happens after a person dies. Some people can’t ascend to heaven, so they become one of the Fades—vicious creatures around humanity but invisible to human eyes.
It’s an action-packed fantasy series with apocalyptic themes but it also has some romantic elements.
Ultimately, the war between the Angelics and the Fades should be of interest!

#21 Forever (2014)
Why You Should Watch:
This urban fantasy drama is about an immortal medical examiner who helps solve crimes.
Forever stands out because of the chemistry between Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd) and Jo Martinez (Alana de la Garza). They are totally adorable together! Detective Martinez is a lot like Detective Chloe Decker too.

#22 Forever Knight (1992)
Why You Should Watch:
Forever Knight is a Canadian urban fantasy series about a vampire detective named Nick Knight (also a Byronic Hero) who hunts bad guys while struggling with his inner demons.
Nick finds true love with a human woman, medical examiner Natalie! If you miss Lucifer’s dynamic with Chloe, this series similarly presents a Byronic Hero investigating crimes while navigating a possible romance. But is their love doomed?
Also of interest to fans is the vampire character who longs to be human: Janette Ducharme. She is quite a bit like Maze – so much so I wondered if this character inspired Maze.

#23 Fringe (2008)
Why You Should Watch:
The show is about an FBI agent named Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) who investigates unusual crimes and paranormal occurrences in the FRINGE Division with the mad scientist, Dr. Walter Bishop, his genius son, Peter, and FBI Agent, Astrid Farnsworth.
Besides the supernatural procedural angle, Olivia and Peter have a slow-build romance that becomes an epic love story over time – like Chloe and Lucifer.
It’s a brilliant series with great twists and turns.

#24 Goblin (2016)
Why You Should Watch:
This k-drama shows us a man named Kim Shin (Gong Yoo), an immortal goblin who needs to find a human bride to break a curse.
Goblin is a lovely romantic series with some great chemistry between the characters! It has similar humor as Lucifer with fascinating immortal characters and great fantasy mythology.

#25 Good Omens (2019)
Why You Should Watch:
David Tennant and Michael Sheen star in this British fantasy comedy about an angel named Aziraphale (Sheen) and a demon named Crowley (Tennant) joining forces to stave off the apocalypse because they like life on Earth.
These two outsiders bond over their shared humanity despite opposing arcs. It’s a fun story about friendship and love transcending the divide between good and evil – with excellent chemistry between Tennant and Sheen.
Lucifer fans will love it! Plus, it is hilarious.

#26 Grimm (2011)
Why You Should Watch:
This urban fantasy police procedural is about Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), who discovers he is a Grimm with an ancient bloodline allowing him to see creatures of myth! He uses this ability to help solve supernatural crimes.
It’s similar to Lucifer, except Detective Burkhardt deals with his mythology-laced cases more seriously. However, it’s still laced with quick-witted humor.
In Grimm, Nick has to balance his job, his love life, and the creatures he hunts. Overall, it’s a whole lot of fun to watch!

#27 Hawaii Five-O (2010)
Why You Should Watch:
It’s a crime procedural with similar humor and tone as Lucifer – just without supernatural elements.
Lauren German herself plays a recurring character! She portrays Lori Weston, a profiler and temporary love interest for the main character, Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Louglin).

#28 Hwayugi/A Korean Odyssey (2017)
Why You Should Watch:
Hwayugi (A Korean Odyssey) is a South Korean fantasy romance series with horror and comedy elements. It is about Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi), a powerful immortal, and his romance with a human woman with the ability to see ghosts.

#30 Jane Eyre (2006)
Why You Should Watch:
Jane Eyre is a brilliant adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s famous gothic romance novel about a young orphan named Jane Eyre ( Ruth Wilson) who has to deal with the harsh treatment of her cruel guardians.
As she grows up, she becomes a governess for a mysterious man named Rochester (Toby Stephens), who is hiding his past from everyone around him.

A romance develops between them, but his dark secret threatens to tear them apart.
While this is a period drama without a crime angle, it is about a Byronic Hero that influenced all the Byronic Heroes that followed (including Lucifer). For that reason alone, it’s a must-watch award-winning miniseries. I also recommend watching the 1983 miniseries and the 2011 film adaptation.

#31 Kindred: the Embraced (1996)
Why You Should Watch:
Kindred: the Embraced is a fictional short-lived urban fantasy series about the vampire society in San Francisco and how they protect their secret from humans.
When a police detective discovers the truth about vampires, he uncovers a dark world of clans and vampire politics. He also finds a Lucifer-like character named Julian Luna, the prince of the vampires in San Francisco, who protects him.

Lucifer has similar themes and drama, so if you’re missing it, this one is for you. Just be warned that it has limited episodes because the network prematurely canceled it due to the tragic passing of the lead actor.

Legacies is a spinoff from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals and follows Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell), daughter of the original vampire Klaus, as she tries to live in the supernatural world while balancing her desires and aspirations.
With family drama, monsters, romance, and good writing, Legacies is not just another teen show. If you’re missing Lucifer‘s witty dialogue and charming characters, then you’ll likely enjoy this one.

While Lost Girl is not about a fallen angel, it is an urban fantasy show with romantic elements.

If you’re looking for a series with a compelling female lead, look no further than Lost Girl. It has brilliant mythology about the Fae and an intense love triangle.

#34 The Mentalist (2008)

He uses those abilities to assist his colleague, Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), with complex mysteries and other crimes.
Over time, Jane and Lisbon’s partnership turns into a powerful romance with a similar dynamic as Lucifer and Chloe. Patrick Jane is also a lot like Lucifer because he always believes he’s right.
With comparable humor, The Mentalist will keep you hooked.

#35 Midnight, Texas (2017)
Why You Should Watch:
Centered on the town of Midnight, where all supernatural creatures go to hide from humans, we follow Manfred Bernardo (Francois Arnaud) as he becomes part of the community. But Manfred comes with a secret of his own.
It’s like Lucifer because it demonstrates how some supernatural creatures (including angels) use their powers for good while some go against the rules. There’s a lot of romance in it too.

Why You Should Watch:
If you want to see Tom Ellis play a swoony romantic lead again, you must watch the British sitcom Miranda starring the super-talented and hilarious Miranda Hart.
Sure, the rom-com series is nothing like Lucifer, but it reveals Tom Ellis’s potential as a romantic leading man!

#37 Moonlight (2007)
Why You Should Watch:

Like Lucifer, Mick has supernatural abilities, is charming and witty, and presents a vulnerable side while falling for Beth, an intelligent reporter connected to his past.

The showrunners combine classic fairy tales with new characters to tell an entertaining story with a unique twist. It also shows how love can conquer all kinds of evil.
Several relationships are woven throughout, including Emma and Regina (Lana Parilla), who have a love-hate friendship dynamic, and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and Emma, a slow-build romance.
Though the two series are different in tone and style, Once Upon a Time will give you all the feels of Lucifer‘s fantasy world with numerous epic romances at its core!

#40 Pushing Daisies (2007)
Why You Should Watch:
While Pushing Daisies is more adorable than Lucifer, it has the same charm and quirky humor.
It presents a different kind of supernatural being in Ned, a pie-maker with the power to bring deceased things back to life with one touch. However, they die again if he touches them a second time.
When he brings his childhood crush, Chuck, back to life, they start piecing together the truth behind how she died. Like Mr. Morningstar, Ned reveals a vulnerable side as he tries to protect those closest to him while solving mysteries with his sidekick, Emerson Cod.
He also decides to keep Chuck alive while they pursue a romantic relationship without ever touching (otherwise, she dies again!)
It’s a well-written urban fantasy with romance, a charming lead, a crime angle, and a fun story.

#41 Rush (2014)
Why You Should Watch:
Tom Ellis stars in this short-lived series about a hard-partying Concierge Doctor living in L.A. He works on various cases for celebrities and other wealthy clients.
Rush is a similar character to Lucifer, and there was a potential romance between Eve and Rush before the series was canceled.
It’s an interesting watch if you want to see more of the charismatic Ellis.

#43 Shadowhunters (2016)
Why You Should Watch:
Shadowhunters is an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series about Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), a young woman finding herself in the middle of a world she didn’t know existed.
She discovers that she’s part of an ancient race called Nephilim that are half-angels, which means they can see and fight demons.
Central to the series is the romance between Clary and Jace, another Shadowhunter and a Byronic Hero.
The war between angels and demons should entertain Lucifer fans, as should the immortal character, Magnus Bane, a warlock with a larger-than-life personality like Lucifer.

It also shows the relationship (with an implied potential romance) between Detective Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) and Ichabod that’s just as important to the show as the fantasy element.

#45 Smallville (2001)
Why You Should Watch:
Smallville is about Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and his journey to becoming Superman. He fights for the people he loves while trying to turn into the man he needs to be to save the world.
The show has three Byronic Heroes: Lex Luthor (who shows us a different side of good and evil), Oliver Queen, and Davis Bloome.
It’s also a pretty romantic series. But fans will mostly want to watch to see Tom Welling, who played Cain in Lucifer.
