Lucifer came to an epic conclusion on Netflix this month, bringing redemption to the Byronic devil played by Tom Ellis and a bittersweet ending to the love story between Lucifer and Chloe Decker (Lauren German).
Byronic Heroes often exist in popular love stories. From the brooding Mr. Rochester to immortal vampires like Angel and Mick St. John and now to the ultimate Byronic, Lucifer, as interpreted in this urban fantasy series full of angels, demons, and, of course, an epic romance.
Byronic Heroes are flawed characters and never represent a romantic ideal. And yet, we find ourselves fascinated with this archetype time and time again. Lucifer Morningstar captured what works so well with the Byronic character by placing him in the center of an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series with writers who understand the journey of a Byronic Hero.

And it is this journey that ultimately paved the path for Lucifer and Chloe to have a proper and genuinely romantic ending.
THE LEAD-IN: CHLOE AND LUCIFER
Lucifer is an immortal angel, bored and full of self-loathing. He broods over his past, longing for the love he doesn’t believe he deserves.
And yet, he finds his first love with Chloe, an LA detective with a heart of gold. She sees the best in him. And over time, after overcoming numerous obstacles and working together as work partners solving murder cases, they find their way to each other personally.
But first, Lucifer must learn to recognize his self-worth and learn how to love. The series follows his redemptive arc as he finally discovers his purpose: to help all the lost souls in hell.
A FUTURE DAUGHTER
This discovery happens after Chloe and Lucifer’s future daughter, Rory, travels from the future to find out why Lucifer abandoned her and Chloe on August 4, 2021.
Since it hasn’t happened yet, Chloe, Lucifer, and Rory try to uncover the mystery – only to discover it’s a time paradox.
For Lucifer to discover his purpose (helping lost souls), Rory needs to grow up believing her father abandoned them so that she’ll become angry enough when Chloe dies (in old age) to self-manifest a new ability and travel back in time. Therefore, helping her father discover his true purpose.

If he changes history, then she wouldn’t ever travel back in time, and he might not ever discover his purpose of helping lost souls in hell to go to heaven after finding redemption and peace.
For the first time, Lucifer needs to be willing to self-sacrifice to reach his full potential. He needs to leave Chloe and Rory on Earth while going to hell for the next sixty years without ever contacting them.
That way, everything comes full circle. Sixty years is only a blip in eternity after all.
(Yes, watching the show, one wonders why Lucifer can’t just visit Chloe in secret without Rory finding out – but I digress.)
LUCIFER AND CHLOE’S ROMANTIC GOODBYE
Knowing that they have to say goodbye for the rest of her Earthly life, Lucifer and Chloe share a tender farewell.
Lucifer plays a song on the piano, and Chloe soon joins him.
“So, um, Lucifer Morningstar, is that like a stage name or something?” she asks him, repeating her previous words from when they first met – purposely invoking nostalgia.
“God given – I’m afraid,” he responds with a smile.
The tone of the scene changes to bittersweet as she sits next to him on the piano bench.

“I know this is what I’m meant to do, and I know that it feels right. It’s my calling…well maybe I don’t need to leave,” Lucifer declares.
“Lucifer, listen,” Chloe interrupts. “If you’re feeling any doubt at all, remember that we are doing this for Rory’s sake.”
Knowing she’s right, a silence falls between them as he fights his emotions. “I don’t want to leave you,” Lucifer tells her. Her voice breaks with equal feeling, “I don’t want you to leave either.”
Chloe then sits on his lap. The two caress each other’s faces and stare into each other’s eyes. The love. The emotion. The tension is palpable.

“Close your eyes,” she tells him. As he does so, Chloe whispers a loving reminder: “You can’t see me. But I’m right here. And it’ll be the same down there. No matter where you go. No matter where you are. I’ll be with you. I’ll be with you always.” Sobbing, Chloe kisses him on the forehead.
The two then share a passionate kiss as emotional music plays in the background—the kiss transitions to an imaginary moment of them kissing on Lucifer’s throne in hell.
When the kiss ends, they embrace, holding onto their final moment for as long as they can. After crying their tears, Chloe makes the moment more light-hearted. She begins to play “Heart and Soul” (badly) on the piano.
“You know, I think you’re gonna miss my incredible musical prowess the most.”
He laughs, “Really?” Lucifer pauses: “I think there are a few other talents I’m gonna miss a lot more.”
They exchange a few more words and then together, as partners, play “Heart and Soul” together, perfectly capturing what their romance has always been about – heart, soul, and working together.
THE ROMANTIC MOMENT: PARTNERS ’TIL THE END
“If the devil can be redeemed, then anyone can.” – Lucifer
Time passes, and everything goes as expected. Chloe dies and goes to heaven – meeting Amenadiel dressed in white. But she wants to fly down to Lucifer.
“Are you ready to go home?” Amenadiel asks her. She nods as he takes her hand.
On the other hand, Lucifer is doing his work (influenced by his therapist, Linda) – helping souls come to terms with their bad choices and guilt.
And then he hears a knock on the door. Lucifer opens the door, surprise and joy simultaneously showing on his face.
“Hello Detective,” he says.
“I thought you could use a partner.” Chloe answers with a big smile.
The two then share a heartwarming kiss of gratitude and pure love.
Yes, Lucifer and Chloe will be partners for eternity. And that was beautiful to watch.

I never watched “Lucifer” because I’m not really a fan of fantasy, but now that I read your text it seems to be interesting. Maybe I give it a chance.
