One of the reasons we started this book club was to share with each of you our love of books, which, of course, means introducing you to many of our personal favorites along the way! We choose each book carefully and for considered reasons.
Well, for this month’s classic book club pick, we selected one of our favorite books of all time. The classic love story is timeless, beautiful, intimate, and one of the most influential books published during the Victorian Era. We hope you’ll join us this month and read with us!
SILVER PETTICOAT BOOK CLUB UPDATE
Before we announce this month’s pick, we have an updated change to how the book club discussion works. Recently, we announced to encourage a majority of the book club discussions to be in person (or on Zoom) with your friends and family or even with your local chapter of the Silver Petticoat Book Club.
Yes, we will still have online discussions on Facebook, Goodreads, and Instagram, but we know it’s always more fun to discuss with other people. So, please use our new addition of the Downloadable Discussion Questions so you can easily discuss each month’s pick with friends and/or family.
The latest update is just a tiny change based on feedback: Instead of the final week, we will post the discussion questions on the last few days of the month.
So, for example, the new selection is a two-month pick. That means we will discuss the book during the final few days of July 2021 (around July 28). This update is just a small change to give readers a few extra days of reading time before we post the discussion!
THE SILVER PETTICOAT BOOK CLUB REVEAL (YOUR JUNE AND JULY 2021 READ!)

The June and July 2021 read is…Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. It’s hard to ignore this Gothic masterpiece which has been included on numerous best books of all time lists.
Not only is it a powerful love story, but it is an incredible bildungsroman about a young woman who knows her own mind and fights for equality in a world that doesn’t even want to acknowledge her existence.
The incredibly intimate novel was revolutionary in its depiction of women and the use of the personal narrative. It’s hard not to be mesmerized, and it’s easy to see how this quickly became a bestseller.
With Jane, we have a fascinating and unique female protagonist. And her love interest, Mr. Rochester? Well, he’s more than a little controversial.
He’s a Byronic Hero who influenced the many Byronic Heroes we see in entertainment today, from Edward in Twilight (to just about every romantic vampire) to Anakin, Captain Jack Sparrow, and more. The brooding bad boy with a (possible) heart of gold has become a necessary archetype in fiction and entertainment!
Jane Eyre is a moving novel that brings the past to life. But it also has lessons for each of us to relate to today. We hope you’ll read our latest pick with us!
BOOK SYNOPSIS OF JANE EYRE (FROM PENGUIN CLASSICS)
Orphaned Jane Eyre endures an unhappy childhood, hated by her aunt and cousins and then sent to comfortless Lowood School. But life there improves and Jane stays on as a teacher, though she still longs for love and friendship. At Mr Rochester’s house, where she goes to work as a governess, she hopes she might have found them – until she learns the terrible secret of the attic.

JOIN THE SILVER PETTICOAT BOOK CLUB
(A Book Club Focused on Sweet or Sophisticated Love Stories From All Genres.)
We rotate between choosing more recent books and “classics,” meaning every other pick will alternate between new and classic choices.
We define any book published before the year 2000 as a classic. New books are everything published afterward. If you’re new to the club, make sure to check out our past book club picks HERE.
The June and July 2021 read is a classic book, first published on October 16, 1847.
HOW THE ONLINE BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION WORKS
We discuss our book club pick the month’s final few days of the month (or the second month for two-month book club picks) on the three social media channels listed below. However, the main discussion questions will be on Facebook and Goodreads. We will also post downloadable discussion questions on The Silver Petticoat Review for personal use.
In short, after we announce a new book club pick, you’ll want to get a copy of the book (buy the book, borrow it from the library, etc.) and read it. Come prepared online to discuss when we post book club discussions on our social media channels during the month’s final few days. You can also gather your own group to discuss with family and or friends in person or online (more information on that below).
We include virtual events from time to time, but most conversations are online and in forums/posts.

Recently, we encouraged gathering your own local chapter of The Silver Petticoat Book Club. That can be as small or as big as you want it to be! Want to discuss the book with your sister or mother? That works!
Or maybe, you have a group of friends who like to hang out together and discuss books. This book club is perfect for that.
While we will continue to have discussions online, the best book clubs also include in-person talks.
