ROMANTIC MOMENT OF THE MONTH: LUCILLE AND CYRIL FROM CALL THE MIDWIFE (SPOILERS!)
Romance has always been an integral part of Call the Midwife. From Chummy and Peter to Dr. Turner and Shelagh, Tom and Barbara, and more! The latest powerful love story to grace Call the Midwife is between Lucille and Cyril.
ABOUT LUCILLE AND CYRIL
Call the Midwife introduced Nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott) to us in the first episode of season seven! Before moving to England, she worked as a librarian in Jamaica. She later joined Nonnatus House, ultimately proving herself a hard worker and a great addition to the midwifery team.
On the other hand, Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte) joined Call the Midwife in series eight. He’s a mechanic (and civil engineering scholar) from British Guiana and has the heart of a preacher – eventually taking on a leadership role at his local church.
Cyril and Lucille develop a friendship and slow-burn courtship. But their story finally takes center stage in season 10, leading to one of the sweetest and most heartfelt TV proposals we’ve seen!
THE BUILDUP – CALL THE MIDWIFE, SEASON 10, EPISODE FOUR
When Cyril receives 25 guineas after an engineering exam, he splurges the money on a new radiogram. And well, Lucille is less than pleased! It seems wasteful when he could better spend the money on his future.
This mild argument causes Cyril to have a revelatory moment, leading to this month’s romantic moment.
THE ROMANTIC MOMENT OF THE MONTH: CALL THE MIDWIFE’S LUCILLE AND CYRIL
Lucille brings Cyril a present at his apartment in a more understanding mood: a Lord Tanamo LP. But she soon discovers the radiogram is gone.
“What happened to the radiogram?” Lucille asks, searching the room.
He responds in complete contrition: “Last week when I bought it, I made a decision. I did not discuss it with you. And I’m sorry.”
But Lucille minimizes the incident. “It was only a radiogram,” she shrugs off.
Cyril, however, is not about to blow off what happened as it’s what led him to this moment. “It was all tied up with things about the future. And if I can’t imagine a future without you in it, I need to ask you about the things I’m planning.”

His sweet, honest, and heartfelt admission capture’s Lucille’s curiosity.
“What sort of things?” she asks.
“From the minute I set eyes on you, there was no past anymore. There was only the now. And where the now might lead me,” Cyril replies romantically.
“We would never have met, would we, if we’d both stayed on our islands?” she wonders, now intrigued by the direction of the conversation.
“And I would never know what it is to have my feet on solid ground,” Cyril continues.
It’s then (in perfect timing) Cyril gets down on one knee and opens the jewelry box with an engagement ring inside. Now, this is one romantic moment indeed!
“What are you doing, Cyril?” Lucille asks, caught off guard.
“This is what happened to the radiogram,” he says, staring up at her. “And this is where I place my heart. All that it ever was and all that it will ever be.”
Tears well up in Lucille’s eyes as he asks. “Will you marry me, Nurse Anderson?”
Thankfully, Lucille responds with a resounding yes as she nods her head through happy tears.
It’s a beautiful, unforgettable proposal. And now, we can’t wait until Cyril and Lucille’s wedding. Here’s to hoping it happens (without drama or tragedy) during the next Call the Midwife Christmas special!
