No agenda, no intentions of drama. Lord Mansfield, her uncle, was credited as the one to take significant steps to abolish slavery in Britain. When historians found that he had a mixed race niece whom he raised as his own daughter, his story became more fascinating. And Belle’s story became unique like no one else’s. A dark skinned woman, raised equally with her white cousin, as a lady.
Yes, she did find love in real life with David and had several kids. But it was her father/daughter relationship with her Uncle that changed the course of human history.
Though this film can be classified as a historical romance, please dig a little deeper. It’s not based on a Jane Austen romance or inspired. It’s real life and that by itself is amazing.

We both absolutely adored it! I also appreciate how the film was subtle with its themes and messages of race, sexism, class and how in reality, on some level or another, all are slaves to the men in power. And of course the wonderful romance! It is now one of my favorite period dramas. 🙂
