Thanks for your thoughts on the film! I completely agree. πŸ™‚ Somehow by the end, their love was as strong as ever – even though they couldn’t be together. Such a beautiful movie.

But what makes this movie so beautiful is the strength of character which both Jane and Tom possess by the end of the story. Any relationship where the desire is to get as much as you can from the other person is likely doomed to failure and will end in β€œfor-getting.” Love where the desire is to give of yourself wholeheartedly is always a beautiful thing and makes you β€œfor-giving.” By the end of the movie Jane and Tom are both acting selflessly, thinking only of what would best for the other. They gave their all and they never, never forgot.

It’s true, may be he would have resented her and they each other if they had runaway together and tried to make a go of life, especially with him attempting to carry the burden of his entire family on his shoulders. It came down to selflessness… or did it? He married a woman he could never love, named his daughter after a woman he loved. I mean, they could have made it to America, where (at that time) opportunity lay and they could have sent for his family or even continued to support them while being with each other. But, this is me, a few centuries later.

The thing is, who want to be Leah? (Biblical reference to Rachel’s sister *look it up*) Leah was unwanted, unloved, and she was only there because her father told her to marry Jacob. If she had refused, where would she have gone? So, she was in a marriage, where her only respite would be to continue to pop out babies and then still watch them be passed over, while Rachel’s two children, to her 8 (I think), were shown favoritism and love. In essence, that’s the predicament the woman Lefoy’s character married -though she had money and connections-, I would have rather been Lady Catherine DeBurg with my fireplaces that rival anyone’s than to be in a marriage like that.

You so want them to find happiness together. Beautifully tragic.

The mystery of Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy! It will never be solved, I’m afraid. πŸ™‚ So, I thought this was a lovely interpretation of history, despite not being overly accurate. And yeah, I agree. Mr. Wisley’s not so bad. Jane just didn’t love him!

I just saw this movie for the first time a few days back.. a few of the scenes were a bit hard to digest, but all in all I enjoyed it immensely. I can’t believe they couldn’t marry because of class differences. He named his daughter Jane and she continued to write happy endings in her love stories.. That is such a sad romance. Oh and I thought Mr Wisley wasn’t too bad as well.

Yes, that’s a great scene! There’s so much longing unfulfilled in this film which I think makes it even more romantic. πŸ™‚

So romantic!
