From Jane Eyre to Harry Potter: 75 of the Best Books Written By Women

There have been many lists of the greatest books by women going around lately, so I thought I’d add one more to the mix, especially since I found most of these lists lacking or perhaps just a tad pretentious.

For my list of the best books written by women, I wanted to show a wide selection of different types of novels (and therefore not always technically the “best” – still that’s subjective anyway), from classic literature to fantasy, modern and even to Young Adult. Though I admit to my bias for romantic British literature (you know, all things Jane Austen and the Brontës). While some of my choices were picked because they “can” be considered the best, others were chosen because the work was influential. I also decided to just focus on fiction, so as much as I love I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, it won’t be on the list.

And, of course, as this is only 75 of the greatest, there are many more wonderful novels by women out there to explore. So check out my choices for 75 of the greatest books written by women in the gallery below (in no particular order). If you haven’t heard of a few of the more obscure books, they’re worth reading!
