Initially, when we wrote this article back in 2015, we focused solely on romantic period drama films. Today, we decided to update this post with a complete list – including more than romance! As period drama has become a massively popular genre on Netflix, we felt it was time to finally update this article for all the period drama fans looking for something new (or old) to watch. Now, this list is for movies only and are the period pieces on Netflix you can finish in just one sitting.
For a list of period drama TV shows and miniseries, head on over to our companion article: 55 Sensational Period Dramas to Watch on Netflix – Miniseries and TV Shows (2021)
Currently, the number of period films available on Netflix is particularly long. So, we narrowed the choices by mainly including period pieces with at least a little romance thrown into the mix (because let’s face it: who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned love story?), period drama movies with a Romanticism influence, or ones we just think you’ll love!
There are, of course, several other fantastic period drama films not included and are also worth checking out (many in the bonus list at the end).
For this list, we also primarily strove for titles that aren’t excessively graphic. We made a few exceptions – usually because they’re incredibly romantic. But if there is an R-rated film (or TV-MA), we will give a content warning for fans who don’t want to see more explicit content.
RELATED: The 60 Best Period Dramas On Amazon Prime – Miniseries And TV Shows (2021)
We mostly tended to include the milder Rated R films and added the more explicit ones in a bonus list at the end. Also included in the bonus list are period movies we haven’t seen and ones that didn’t make the list but may still be worth watching.
We hope you find this list useful and have new period pieces to add to your Netflix queue. And don’t forget, if you’re looking for a show to binge instead, check out our list of period drama miniseries and TV shows on Netflix.
Without further ado, here are the top period pieces on Netflix – movie edition.
NOTE: Netflix availability is for the U.S. and at the time of publication and can change at any time. This article was first published in 2015 and has been updated for September 2021.

Thanks. Netflix is constantly changing…
Definitely should put palm trees in the snow- even though the language is Spanish, I couldn’t help but love it….
Thanks for all your recommendations. I love period dramas but feel extremely uncomfortable when they include (quite often, unnecessary) sex and nudity.
Really appreciate your recommendations.
Kathy
You’re welcome! Yeah, we’re not a fan of that either. We’re glad we could help!
