I find it interesting that she has gone on to play so many unhinged characters.
Have you seen the stage adaption from the National Theatre? It is stunning.

Zelah Clarke is excellent! My personal favorite is Ruth Wilson, though. She may be pretty – but I don’t think Jane is supposed to be unattractive. She’s plain – partially because she is without adornment. It’s always interesting how every viewer interprets actors in roles differently and finds their favorites! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

They’re both great British actors with presence. My vote is Zelah Clarke for Jane because to me she looks the part. Very petite, not too pretty and very feisty. I love both but would swop the top two.

Thanks for sharing! You can currently stream the Timothy Dalton version on Britbox if you want to check it out.

Great thoughts. I haven’t heard of that interpretation of Stephens’ performance before. I personally love him in the role, but I love hearing other people’s thoughts. And yes, the cinematography in Welle’s version is gorgeous.

I disliked Toby Stephens the first couple of times. Too yuppie. But I’ve come to like the very visible effect that Jane has on him. I do like the cinematograhpy in the old Orson Wells version.

I was obsessed with it while it was on the BBC on Sunday night, on tenterhooks waiting a whole week for the next episode and discussing it at length with equally obsessed friends and colleagues. It grabbed me from the start with that brilliant scene of Jane’s imagination.
Ruth gave so much depth to Jane, strength, vulnerability and deep, deep feeling. You understood why Rochester saw her, really saw her. And Toby was a revelation as Rochester. That wildness you mention, the wit, such an unforgettable performance.
I’ve yet to find the Timothy Dalton adaptation, I am curious about it. I did
like what Fassbender did with the role too.

It’s so romantic when they kiss outside under the trees after the proposal, and the music swells with the violin playing a beautiful melody (one of my favorite scenes). The Gothic feel is spot on and the chemistry between the two leads is palpable. I have to watch some of the others, so thanks for the recommendations! I enjoyed the bits of the 1983 version that I was able to see and thought they did an excellent job of portraying Jane’s heartbreaking childhood.
