In reply to Doris Clarke. You are welcome to your opinion, of course! I happen to appreciate both Firth and Rintoul's performances. And yes, not everyone likes Charlotte Bronte. But her opinions on Austen were over 150 years ago. So, it's just her opinion from a different time. I don't see the point in holding a grudge against her. Many people enjoy both female writers. I appreciate both women writing in a time that was difficult for women and admire them both.

Please, stop with the Colin Firth. No one compares with the portrayal by David Rintoul opposite Elisabeth Garvie in the Masterpiece Theatre production about 15 years earlier. Even Judy Parfitt’s Lady Catherine was far, far superior. Thank you for the recommendations, but I say no to Charlotte Bronte. Anyone who hates the works of Jane Austen is not someone whose work I care to read again.

Definitely BECOMING JANE AUSTEN BY JON SPENCE is a must read. It’s the biography of the real-life Jane Austen, and more compelling than fiction.
