For February, we’ve chosen a new Gaslamp fantasy full of romance, wit, and adventure! Find out all the details about our February 2021 read here!
January came and went rather quickly, and a new month is here! But with it comes a brand-new pick for The Silver Petticoat Book Club. For this month’s read, we chose a new book we recently had the pleasure of reading.
It was so much fun, full of adventure and non-stop action, and an entertaining romance that it was hard to put down. It was also a unique story full of fabulous worldbuilding we think you’ll enjoy.
THE SILVER PETTICOAT BOOK CLUB REVEAL (YOUR FEBRUARY 2021 READ!)
The Silver Petticoat Book Club pick of February is The Brass Queen by Elizabeth Chatsworth (who also just so happens to be a book club member!) This book is the introduction to what will hopefully become a fun series of books. However, book club members can read it as a standalone.
The Brass Queen is an enjoyable blend of genres, including Gaslamp fantasy, steampunk, romance, alternate history, historical, and even a bit of science-fiction. In the book, you’ll find spies, assassins, a handsome cowboy, a witty heroine, and even Queen Victoria! Overall, it’s a wonderful debut from the imaginative Chatsworth!

Content Note: The book is PG-like.
If you need more convincing, read this list of positive reviews from big review sites like Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, and more! When you read the book, you’ll find out why Buzzfeed picked it as a new book they “can’t stop talking about.”
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
She knows a liar when she sees one. He knows a fraud when he meets one.
In a steam-powered world, Miss Constance Haltwhistle is the last in a line of blue-blooded rogues. Selling firearms under her alias, the “Brass Queen,” she has kept her baronial estate’s coffers full. But when US spy J. F. Trusdale saves her from assassins, she’s pulled into a search for a scientist with an invisibility serum. As royal foes create an invisible army to start a global war, Constance and Trusdale must learn to trust each other. If they don’t, the world as they know it will disappear before their eyes.
If you like the Parasol Protectorate or the Invisible Library series, you’ll love this gaslamp fantasy—a rambunctious romantic romp that will have you both laughing out loud and wishing you owned all of Miss Haltwhistle’s armaments.

(A Book Club Focused on Sweet or Sophisticated Love Stories From All Genres.)
For those new to the book club, we rotate between choosing more recent books and “classics,” meaning every other pick will alternate between contemporary and classic choices. We define any book published before the year 2000 as a classic. New books are everything published afterward. This month’s pick is a brand-new book, first published in January of 2021.
While we don’t exclusively focus on clean romance, we do select books with typically less explicit content. We’re interested in Jane Austen-like romances rather than erotica. Some books may include explicit content, profanity, violence, etc. However, it will not be throughout the book, and we will always give a warning.
Note: As our selections include classics, our choices will not always be easy reads. So, expect to be stretched if you’re not used to reading novels from past centuries! We may devote two months to a classic story if it’s exceptionally long.
How the Book Club Discussion Works
