Just after the Second World War, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England’s finest novelists. Now it’s home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen’s legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen’s home and her legacy. These people—a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others—could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war, others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATED BY ACTOR RICHARD ARMITAGE:

The popular British actor, Richard Armitage, narrates the audiobook. He’s known for starring in productions such as North and South, The Hobbit, Ocean’s 8, Robin Hood, and more.

BOOK REVIEW BY THE SILVER PETTICOAT REVIEW

For even more book details (including thoughts on why we love this book), make sure to read our review of The Jane Austen Society. It includes everything you need to know!

BOOK REVIEW: THE JANE AUSTEN SOCIETY IS THE MUST-READ NOVEL OF THE YEAR

Content Warning: The book includes brief strong language in a few scenes (though not excessively) and an explicit scene/attempted assault related to a Hollywood producer, so be aware. Overall, if the book were a movie, it’d probably be rated PG-13.

  1. I checked out the digital version from my online library and am halfway through already. I had to watch Mansfield Park again to quickly get reacquainted with Fanny Price and Henry Crawford because of being mentioned in this book. An absorbing read so far and interesting characters from different walks of life.

  2. I just finished this book and loved it. I really cared about all the characters-well, except Jack. Of course, I was predisposed to love it because they were all huge Jane Austen fans like me. This book proves that a story can have a lot of depth and still make you feel happy while reading it. I definitely give it five stars.
