Romantic Moment of the Month: The Love Story of Schmigadoon’s Melissa and Josh

The season finale has the sweetest romantic ending you can’t help but love!

Do you love the golden age of romantic musicals with big numbers and epic declarations of love? Then look no further than the romantic parody Schmigadoon! about the couple, Melissa and Josh!!

SCHMIGADOON! – MELISSA AND JOSH – THE SETUP

Josh and Melissa are New York doctors who have the most adorable meet-cute when Melissa can’t get a candy bar out of the vending machine at the hospital. Enter Josh, who knows just the right spot to kick.

So, of course, Melissa kicks the vending machine only for almost all the candy bars to come flying out! And from that point on, their love affair begins. But as the years go on, their romance becomes stagnant and too comfortable.

Melissa loves romance. She watches classic musicals and longs for Josh to step up with a grand gesture. So, they go on a camping trip to ignite the romance.

Unfortunately, it rains the entire time. That is until Josh and Melissa hear a bell and cross a mysterious bridge into a cute little town of sunshine called Schmigadoon, where the townspeople break out into song and dance.

The town seems a little old-fashioned, but it’s all a gimmick, right? Or so they think until Melissa and Josh try to leave and cross the magical bridge.

Prevented by a leprechaun, they discover they can’t escape the musical town until they find true love. But since they can’t cross and leave the village, does that mean they don’t love each other?

NOT TRUE LOVE?

Thinking they don’t see each other as true love, Melissa and Josh set out to find romance with others in town (creating a few memorable original songs), so they can escape the romantic musical they’re stuck in for now.

But no one quite compares to the love story of Melissa and Josh. They have problems that needed addressing: Melissa wanted their love story to be perfect while Josh wasn’t emotionally open.

They both have to realize that neither one is the perfect partner. Every relationship takes work, and finding true love is more about working on love rather than discovering some random soulmate.

THE ROMANTIC MOMENT – MELISSA AND JOSH

Meeting in the town square in the middle of a mayoral election, Melissa tells Josh:

“I’m sorry for acting like everything that wasn’t perfect was a failure. For treating you like a burden that I had to carry on my way to some ridiculous fantasy. For pushing you to change without ever considering maybe I needed to change too.

And I just want you to know that I’m in it for the long haul. That I choose to believe in us. Whether in Schmigadoon, in New York, wherever. Because I love you, Josh Skinner. And you are, and always have been, enough.”

Now, Josh doesn’t sing. And he hates musicals with a passion. But his love for Melissa forces him out of his comfort zone. He can’t help but sing for Melissa in one of the sweetest TV moments since a Once Upon a Time declaration of love.

And Josh (who can’t sing) finally sings his song (as one must in a town that turns most conversations into musical numbers): “You Make Me Wanna Sing,” and it’s sweet and satisfying in every possible way.

While he’s off-key, Josh sings emotionally with his whole heart. He’s finally ready to change and be vulnerable for love. Plus, the fact that he can’t sing makes the scene even more effective and romantic.

THE SONG

I am not a man of many words.

Never been romantic like all the lovesick herds.

I laughed at every sentimental thing.

But you make me wanna sing.

Seems my heart was always like a stone.

Even when you’re with me, you kind of feel alone.

And so, I bounced from fling to fling to fling.

But you make me wanna sing.

Josh begins to dance, continuing to sing more emotional lyrics.

I wanna hold you and spin you around.

So fast that we’ll never part.

I wanna hold you and spin you around.

‘Cause, that’s what you’ve done to my heart.

Now I’m here and offering my hand.

And asking you to take it so we can make a stand.

For love and all the joy that it can bring.

‘Cause you make me wanna sing.

As the lights dim, the two begin to dance, creating a dreamy atmosphere. When the dance sequence ends, Josh and Melissa begin to sing a duet.

JOSH:

Now I’m here and offering my hand.

MELISSA:

And I will gladly take it so we can make a stand.

JOSH & MELISSA:

For love and all the joy that it can bring.

’Cause you make me wanna sing.

They then end their musical number with an old-fashioned, romantic kiss.

THE BRIDGE

Now it’s time for them to cross the bridge. As the town continues singing and dancing in a catchy musical number, Josh and Melissa take each other’s hands and start walking toward that magical bridge. The townsfolk follow to say goodbye.

And just as the music swells, Josh and Melissa hold hands and begin to cross the enchanted bridge, but the scene goes black before we can see what happens.

Do they get their happily ever after? That was never the point. Schmigadoon! was always about the romantic journey of Melissa and Josh. And it was delightful to watch.
