Finally saw this and am smitten! It’s hand’s down the best installment since the original trilogy. I loved the originals, HATED the prequel trilogy, and haven’t been so impressed with the current sequels, so I’d pretty much given up hope. But this is a total gem. And so much bittersweet romantic restraint, where individual desires are subsumed by the greater good — oh man, now that is ROMANCE!

FA definitely suffers from its lack of character development, mainly due to this notion of keeping Rey’s parentage a mystery, while RO gives Jyn and the others many moments to shine. The last scene between Jyn and Cassian is one of the most romantic movie moments I’ve seen in quite a while.

You really make some excellent points. I didn’t go too into detail because I didn’t completely want to spoil the ending, but I completely agree with you. The tragedy of the film is what makes it so beautiful and romantic. Their lives only knew war and that was all they were going to ever know. It’s a pity some people can’t recognize the depth behind these characters and script.

I liked your review (and your blog btw) it’s a fresh vision of the movie and it’s much more interesting coz you developp on a point not many people talked about.

I kinda see their relation as a embryon of love relation, because of their lives (they were made to sacrifice their lives (Cassian was a soldier since he was 6 he said, from that what life could he have? he can’t have the luxury to fall in love and live his love story. That’s what I’d like to insist on, my vision of the movie would be that it was actually clear (but hidden) from the beginning of the movie that the group was a sacrifice group (you need to know I didn’t read the synopsis, niether did I watch the trailer when I watched the movie the first time so it was total surprise) : Cassian is the hero but when he present the group of voluntears for the mission Jyn proposed, it’s made quite clear he and the group are all the same : they can’t be a real person they are like simply rebels, they are soldiers and when you know Cassian was a soldier from his 6 it seems clear these rebels didn’t have time to live their lives, and it’s almost the same for Jyn. From that their relation is complicated, they don’t have time for it because first of all they are soldiers before persons.

So Jyn’s relation with Cassian is (for me) the one of Jyn with a rebel, of a girl soldier with a man soldier -> according the context their relation was destroyed (not impossible but cut) from the beginning, thats what imo is so tragic about them, we see an embryo of relation made impossible by the context and the tragedies of their lives, any of them can be a lover because they were almost born soldiers. Without the context of the war they are nodoby so the movie could only show us their tragedy : even if they had SPOIL SPOIL survived the mission what could they have done? only war.

So for me its the movie of a sacrified generation, group of people, it is the desaster that A new hope didn’t show us, its A star wars story, the story of the forgotten, the one who like the heros fought, but who aren’t the heros, the work in the shadow. It’s not the story of Jyn and Cassian, but the one of what they mean : these people sacrified by the empire and war and that we don’t know. It’s like the other half of a new hope, it’s when there was no hope.

That’s why I loved the movie and found it so sad and very tragic. There was no solution for them, from the beginning they were doomed. It’s like the best prequel A new hope could “hope for” (couldn’t help it lol) because you then see all the impact A new hope have what it prevented, the tragedy it has stopped : no more Jyn and Cassian, their death could also mean the end of doomed generations, which is also a sign of hope.
