I have just seen this and yes it is beautiful .. The actors did justice to the characters with exceptional talent to bring the story to life. Can you please recommend any other such wonderful series/movie? I have seen North and South as well as the Jane Austen adaptions .. Lark rise to Candelford was another lovely one ..
Thank you for the informative review.

But it’s very well-produced and acted. Great to see a kiss between Bathsheba and Gabriel! If you want to see a more in-depth version, check out the 1967 or better yet, the four-part Masterpiece Theatre miniseries from 1998.

I cannot agree with you too much about Matthias Schoenaert’s performance. I’ve never really seen him in anything before, and now I’m going to have to seek out some of his other movies. (Such a chore. 😉 Gabriel Oak is my favourite character in the book, and I think he really did him justice. Like you I wish that more scenes from the book could have been included. Knowing the book and being a fan of the 1967 version, I am used to a longer more leisurely treatment of the novel, so I am acutely aware of what’s missing. If this movie was even just a half an hour longer, I would not have minded a bit.

I loved this movie and you really described it so well. I also totally agree that some key scenes from the book were unfortunately missing.

I read this years ago and always loved the book (I’ve slowly been rereading it too), but I do think the movie actually improved Gabriel as a character. He’s even more romantic. This actor totally sold it.

It is a dream of a film. I wish we had more films like this.

You should. It’s definitely worth it, even if the theater is pretty empty…
